Naval Air Station Brunswick Wins Environmental Award

February 5th, 2010 by user: nasbpublicaffairs [1]

Naval Air Station Brunswick has won a prestigious award from the Chief of Naval Operations for the third year in a row for its work on environmental restoration.

The fiscal year 2009 Environmental Restoration Installation Award, announced Friday by Chief of Naval Operations Adm. Gary Roughead, stems from the base’s work in environmental cleanup as it moves toward the May 2011 BRAC-mandated closure date. Among the accomplishments cited:

• Using an accelerated timeframe and innovative technologies destined to provide long-term savings of at least $3 million.
• Completing the major excavation and restoration of a former landfill site, resulting in the removal and disposal of over 42,000 tons of ash-contaminated soil and debris.
• Improving public outreach through establishing a Restoration Advisory Board charter, publishing several newsletters, and other methods.

The annual CNO Environmental Awards recognize Navy individuals, teams, ships and installations for their exceptional environmental stewardship. Competition categories include natural resources conservation, cultural resources management, environmental quality, pollution prevention, environmental restoration, and environmental planning.

NASB won in the same category last year, as well as in Natural Resources Conservation for fiscal year 2007.

“I’m incredibly proud of our environmental team for winning this prestigious award for the second year running – a rare occurrence,” said Naval Air Station Brunswick’s Commanding Officer, Capt. Will Fitzgerald. “It’s vital that we remain strong stewards of the environment so we return this land to the people to be enjoyed safely for generations to come.”

The base’s environmental director, Lisa Joy, said the award reflects the commitment toward collaboration and hard work.

“This award is the recognition of much collaboration, hard work, and dedication by all team members, including the Restoration Advisory Board (RAB),” Joy said.

Gorham Dance Teacher Volunteers in the Dominican Republic during the Earthquake

February 4th, 2010 by user: sarahnelson [10]

This January, a group of more than 40 nurses, nursing students, Peace Corp volunteers, doctors, Spanish interpreters and volunteers travelled to the Dominican Republic to provide health care to rural villages.

“It was a wonderful experience. Each day we traveled to remote villages to set up clinics to treat the people of the villages,” said volunteer Jasmine Quarles of the Dance Studio of Maine. “I met several people who had not seen a health care provider for several years.”

Each year the University of Southern Maine works together with the Partners for International Rural Health Program in the Dominican Republic to serve over 2,000 patients in the 2 week period. Students and nurses deliver community health services and education while attempting to overcome basic obstacles such as language barriers, educational, and social conditions.

This year’s trip was unique because of the earthquake in Haiti. The group was only 70 miles from Port-au-Prince, where the quake in was felt but did only minimal damage to the area. “We could feel the quake but had no idea the damage that was done just across the island,” Quarles said. “I am so thankful we were there and able to help. I can only imagine that next year they will need even more support. I am going to encourage everyone I know to get involved. It is truly a life changing experience and such a good cause.”

For more information, contact Jasmine Quarles at jasmine.quarles@maine.edu
