Paws for a Cause: Woofstock 2007

Friday, July 20th, 2007

Damariscotta-On Saturday, August 4th, The Lincoln Home on River Road in Newcastle will be the idyllic setting for this summer’s biggest pet lover’s event: Woofstock 2007. Woofstock is the collaborative effort of The Animal House (located on Main Street in Damariscotta), and the Damariscotta-Newcastle Rotary Club to offer pet lovers in midcoast Maine the opportunity to enjoy a day of festivities with their four-legged friends. In previous years, both The Animal House and the Rotary Club offered very successful summer fundraisers: The Animal House’s “Pet Education Fair” and the Rotary Club’s “Family Fun Dog Show”. Finding the events very complimentary, this year they decided to join forces for one great day on the Damariscotta River!

Woofstock will be featuring seminars and demonstrations, pet services such as nail clipping, toothbrushing and microchipping, make-your-own-doggie sundae, and games for pooches and their people! There will be forty pet-related vendors with plenty of freebies and product information, face painting, a Silent Auction, raffles, food (hot dog, bbq items and more!), and of course….the Dog Show! Also scheduled to attend are seven local shelters and rescues: The Lincoln County Animal Shelter, The Humane Society of Knox County, Safe Harbor Chesapeake Bay Retriever Rescue, Catwalk…DogPath, Maine Greyhound Placement, Maine Australian Shepherd Rescue & Placement Helpline and Camden-Rockport Animal Rescue League. They will have information about their respective organizations, as well as adoption application procedures and available pets. All proceeds from the Silent Auction and raffle will be donated to the rescues and shelters represented at Woofstock.

The schedule for Woofstock 2007 is as follows:

9:30am: Woofstock Opens, Silent Auction Begins
10:00am-12:00pm: Registration for Family Fun Dog Show
10:00am: Canine Good Citizen Testing (you must sign up at The Animal House in advance for this, limited to 5 dogs)

Goodwill`s NeuroRehab Internship Program Accepted as APPIC Member

Monday, July 16th, 2007

Portland-The Neurorehabilitation Internship Program offered through Goodwill Industries of Northern New England was recently approved for membership in the Association of Postdoctoral and Psychology Internship Centers (APPIC). APPIC is an educational, non-profit organization whose mission is to enhance internship and postdoctoral training programs in professional psychology. Members are independent agencies conducting or sponsoring internships or postdoctoral training programs, with over 700 programs represented. As an APPIC member, the Goodwill Industries Neurorehabilitation Internship Program has earned the ability to participate in APPIC`s computer match program, designed to match the training interests of an intern with the experiences provided by the member program. Goodwill Industries of Northern New England offers two Neurorehabilitation programs, BaySide in Portland, Maine and WestSide in Lewiston, Maine. Both programs serve individuals with acquired brain injuries and other neurological impairments. In becoming an APPIC member, Goodwill’s desirable learning environment has become available to pre-doctoral interns throughout the country. Selected interns will gain the opportunity to get hands-on experience working with a multi-disciplinary team made up of occupational therapists, physical therapists, speech therapists, counselors, nurses, recreational therapists, physiatrists, and neuropsychologists. Working as a member of this multidisciplinary team provides a unique learning experience that is not often available to interns looking for training opportunities. Goodwill`s NeuroRehabilitation Services also maintain an extensive database which allows for excellent research opportunities for the interns. Leading this internship program for Goodwill is Robert Perna, Ph.D., ABPN. Dr. Perna is the Clinical Director at WestSide NeuroRehabilitation Services, and is board certified in clinical neuropsychology and psychopharmacology. He is an adjunct associate professor teaching neuroscience at the University of Southern Maine and has published and presented on numerous brain injury and neurorehabilitation issues. Dr. Perna’s research interests include brain injury treatment outcomes, psychological adjustment after brain injury, cognitive rehabilitation, and pharmacological interventions for treatment of brain injury.
