48th Annual Down East Ski Sale –  NOV 28 from 8am – 5pm –  at Portland Expo
Public registration to sell items in sale 1-6pn on  Nov 27

For Immediate release

One of Thanksgiving Weekend’s biggest events for skiers and riders is the 48th Annual Down East Ski Sale,   being held Saturday, Nov. 28th from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.  at the Portland Expo Building  on Park Avenue,  next to Hadlock Field, home of the Sea Dogs.

About 10,000 items will be on sale from skis to boots,  poles and bindings,  including plenty of cross-country equipment and lots of gear for kids. You can also find parkas, ski pants, goggles and accessories. Most of the inventory is new,  left over inventory from past ski seasons brought in by area ski shops . That’s the reason for the rock-bottom prices.  There’s also some used gear, consigned by private individuals. The general public may bring their ski related items to enter into the sale  Friday November 27th, from 1pm to 6pm. There is a $1.00 registration fee per item, and 15% commission is charged if the item is sold. The club’s commission helps fund ski-related scholarships and other activities. Also present on Saturday will be booths representing organizations like the Ski Maine Association and skiing areas like Sugarloaf and Shawnee Peak.

This is the Down East Ski Club’s 48th annual ski sale. The event was one of the first of its kind in 1962. The idea was to give skiing families an opportunity to “swap out” equipment to help make skiing more affordable.   For many, standing in line waiting for the sale to open to find the best deals has become a tradition, but with over over 10,000 pieces of ski equipment: boots, skis, bindings, helmets, clothing and poles, great deals can be found all day long. Most southern maine ski enthusiasts wouldn’t overlook this event any more than they’d forget the turkey and stuffing for Thanksgiving.

The Down East Ski Club was founded in 1948 by World War II veterans of the 10th Mountain Division and has always had a “work hard, play hard motto”.  Founding member Tom Bennett of Gorham Maine was inducted into the Maine Ski Hall of Fame in October of this year for his long service to the sport of skiing.  Down East Ski Club was established in 1948 and has been a strong presence on the Maine ski scene ever since, especially in the Bridgton area where the club has a chalet. Bennett of Gorham says, “The Club has not only supported Pleasant Mountain, now Shawnee Peak over the years, but also has taken part in activities sponsored by the Town of Bridgton. ”   Bennett was the force behind the club’s Russ Haggett Memorial Scholarship established 1992.  The Down East Ski Club works with Shawnee Peak to hold the annual Russ Haggett Memorial Race to raise funds for two $1,000 scholarships awarded to Lake Region High School ski team members.
