Law Firm Bernstein Shur Elects Four New Shareholders

Portland, Maine, November 12, 2009 – Bernstein Shur, one of northern New England’s largest law firms, has elected Theodore A. Small, Daniel J. Murphy, Joel T. Shaw, and Sarah Bradley Tracy shareholders of the firm.

Ted Small is a member of Bernstein Shur’s construction and litigation practice groups.  His practice concentrates on lien claims, complex construction disputes and general civil litigation and focuses on business litigation.  He has represented property owners and contractors in disputes and in the drafting of contracts.  His experience in business litigation includes representing corporations, partnerships, other entities and their principals in corporate governance disputes, shareholder disputes and contract disputes. Prior to joining Bernstein Shur, Small worked for a political consulting firm in Washington, D.C.

Small received his JD from the University of Maine School of Law and holds an Master of Arts degree from the University of Florida and a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Maine.

Dan Murphy is a trial lawyer and a member of Bernstein Shur’s Litigation Practice Group.  Murphy joined Bernstein Shur after serving as a law clerk to the Honorable Leigh I. Saufley, chief justice of the Maine Supreme Judicial Court.  Murphy’s practice concentrates on civil litigation with a focus on commercial litigation.  His experience includes representing plaintiffs in various corporate governance matters, including derivative and other suits on behalf of shareholders and limited partners.  In addition, Murphy’s practice also includes representing defendants in unfair trade practices claims, bankruptcy preference matters and work on behalf of financial institutions, wholesale distributors and other business clients.

Murphy received his JD from the University of Maine School of Law and holds a BA from St. Michael’s College.

Joel Shaw is a member of Bernstein Shur’s Business Law Practice Group and its Securities and Financial Services Industry Practice Group.  His practice focuses on capital raising in the public and private debt and equity markets, as well as representing securities industry and capital market participants with respect to regulatory, compliance and transactional matters.

Shaw received his JD from the Franklin Pierce Law Center and holds a BA from Boston College.

Sarah Tracy is a member of the Energy & Environmental and Litigation Practice Groups at Bernstein Shur. She maintains a diverse practice before Maine regulatory agencies and in state and federal courts. She represents developers and owners of energy generation facilities before the Maine Public Utilities Commission, the Land Use Regulation Commission, the Board of Environmental Protection, and the First Circuit Court of Appeals. Tracy also counsels Bernstein Shur’s energy clients in various matters including rate design, issues related to long-term energy and capacity contracts and issues related to the regulation of qualifying small power production and cogeneration facilities.

Tracy received her JD from the University of Connecticut Law School and holds a BA from Amherst College.
