Yarmouth Company Celebrates Third Anniversary, Rapid Growth

Yarmouth, Maine (January 28, 2010) — Three years ago, Linda Varrell left the executive offices of a publicly traded bank to start a one-person company, Broadreach Public Relations, in the belief that she could combine an old-fashioned business truth with 21st Century communications practices.

Varrell set out to create and strengthen relationships, with the help of everything from leading-edge technology and marketing techniques to targeted events and publications. She believed that building bridges would help her company and her clients succeed.

She was right.

Broadreach Public Relations not only survived its infancy, despite the worst economic downturn since the Great Depression. The company has grown rapidly and continues to expand its reach.

Broadreach has done business with clients as far away as India, and helped many Maine clients win attention and achieve their goals. In 2009 alone, Broadreach more than doubled its annual revenue; moved into new office space; hired full-time staff, and expanded its client base to include well-known organizations in the finance, retail, tourism, technology and health-care sectors.

Varrell also took on a business partner in Eric Blom, an award-winning newspaper journalist, who worked in numerous editing and reporting roles at the Portland Press Herald/Maine Sunday Telegram, including that of Business Editor.

“It is exciting and a bit scary to start your own business,” Varrell said. “But I always knew that we would be successful if we could connect our clients with the people they care about.”

Varrell’s background in business banking and sales gives her a deep understanding of how companies operate and a unique perspective when recommending marketing strategy to them. Blom also has a strong understanding of business and media, having worked as a manager for many years and as a financial journalist.

“We like to say that I asked the questions, as a journalist, and Linda answered them, as a corporate spokesperson,” Blom said. “That gives us an unusually well-rounded understanding of the media environment and how to get clients’ messages out to the public.”

Other key members of the Broadreach team are:

  • Kate Bachman, a public relations specialist with expertise in social media and graduate of Mercer University
  • Joanne Jordan, who focuses on events planning and formerly worked as Special Events/Community Relations Manager at the Maine Cancer Foundation.

The company also works with several talented outside partners, including photographers and web designers, to bring their expertise to the process of getting clients’ messages out.

“We help people tell their authentic story,” said Varrell, who has national accreditation in public relations, as well as advanced degrees in business. “And that’s not a hard sell.”
