Build-Out at Historic Library Provides New Public Spaces

Sanford, MAINE (Dec. 01, 2010) — TPD Construction has completed a major build-out project at Maine’s oldest tax-supported library, transforming long-vacant space into attractive and functional public rooms and staff areas.

The McArthur Public Library in Biddeford plans a Dec. 2 open house at its 270 Main St. location, from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m., to celebrate the new space.

About 2,500 square feet of the library had been vacant since the construction of an addition, 15 years ago. Since August, TPD Construction of Sanford has been crafting that space into a showpiece, with features such as a curving glass half-wall, a large oak bookcase and reading areas designed for comfort.

“The quality of TPD’s workmanship is as good as anybody out there,” said Dean Wolfahrt, president of the McArthur Library Association. “This is a wonderful, new space for library patrons to enjoy. It’s what we have wanted this space to become for many years.”

Changes include a new quiet reading room, multipurpose community meeting room, young-adult area and open public spaces, including more area for wireless Internet users. Office space also has been created, and staff will now be able to interact with patrons in new ways – including a “mobile” reference librarian, equipped with a laptop.

Wolfahrt said TPD was selected for the project not only because it offered a competitive price, but also because the company has a track record of completing projects on time and on budget, while producing the results they promise.

“We really focused on turning the Association’s dream for this project into reality,” said Tom Dumont, president of TPD Construction. “We take pride in our work everywhere, whether it is a large commercial structure down South or a multi-unit apartment building in Maine. Still, there is something particularly special about working on a project that will benefit so many people and that has such historic roots.”
