Gray, MAINE (Oct. 31, 2011) – Despite the surge of information and awareness programs,
the percentage of women receiving mammograms has declined in recent years. Patient Advocates, thinking that people’s busy week day schedules may be a factor in the declining numbers, recently collaborated with Mercy Hospital to provide mammography services to clients on a Saturday when the equipment usually stands idle and most women have time off from work.
Patient Advocates reached out to their women patients over the age of 40 who had not had a mammogram in the past year to let them know about the opportunity on Saturday October 22. The response was heartening, with 16 slots available for the Saturday screening all were filled to capacity.
One fourth of the women who participated had never had a mammogram before and were pleased with the service at Mercy Hospital. Patients were greeted by staff of Patient Advocates and were provided pink breast cancer awareness bracelets, pink ribbon pins and refreshments. Mary McCann, a Patient Advocates’ patient, says “I was very happy with the warm welcome from the staff of Patient Advocates. I could tell they were concerned for my health and any anxiety I might have had. The staff of Mercy Hospital was very friendly and caring.” A second mammogram screening event is planned at Mercy for early next year.
