Maine Youth Leadership Announces New Board and Officers

PORTLAND, MAINE (November 1, 2011)—Maine Youth Leadership has appointed new officers for its board of directors and elected several new members.

Tom Renehan, Sales Manager of New England for Swedish Match US Sales, has joined the Maine Youth Leadership board as President. He lives in Yarmouth with his wife Maura Halkiotis.

Laura Beckmann has been a member of the Maine Youth Leadership board for over three years, serving as Treasurer and now Vice President. She is Vice President of Benefit Services at Unum who is one of MYL’s key corporate sponsors. Laura resides in Yarmouth with her husband Steve and two sons, one of which attended MYL as an ambassador in 2009.

Barb McGuan has been appointed Treasurer, serving as a member of the MYL board since November 2008. She is a tax principal at BerryDunn in Portland and specializes in working with nonprofits. Barb resides in Brunswick with her husband David.

Maine Youth Leadership also welcomes Ben Sprague, Tracy Laverriere and Gary Tempe to its board of directors. Ben Sprague attended MYL as an ambassador in 2000 and joined the Board in 2011. Originally from Bangor, Maine, Ben graduated from Harvard in 2006 and worked for the Boston Red Sox for three years before returning to Bangor to work as a financial advisor.

Tracy Laverriere a recent graduate of Endicott College joined the Maine Youth Leadership Board in September of 2011. Tracy was an ambassador in 2005 and has been involved with the ever since. She currently resides in Biddeford.

Gary Tempe of Gorham Savings Bank resides in Gorham with his wife Alyson. He graduated from the University of Maine in 2007 and has lived in Southern Maine throughout his life.

They join current board members:

Matthew Mehalic is an attorney at Norman, Hanson & DeTroy, LLC, in Portland, Maine. In addition to being a member of the MYL Board of Directors he is also the secretary of MYL. Matthew lives in Falmouth with his wife Kimberly, son Mason.

Kathy Leighton is a Medical aesthetician and manages Skin Solutions from Plastic and Hand. She joined the board after her son’s experience in Maine Youth Leadership. She is presently a Co-chair a role and has held the position for seven seminars. Kathy resides in Cumberland with her husband Brian.

Jim Cox of Unum is one of the founders of Maine Youth Leadership and has served on its committees and board for 32 years. He resides in Saco with his wife Cindy and daughter Allison and is the proud grandfather of two from his daughter Erin and son-in-law Jason.

Linda Varrell, President of Broadreach Public Relations joined the Maine Youth Leadership Board in 2002 and is presently Seminar Co-Chair, a role she has held for 6 seminars. She resides in Yarmouth with her husband, Paul.

Dr. Elizabeth Fisher Turesky is a professor in the Leadership and Organizational Studies Program at the University of Southern Maine, Lewiston-Auburn College. After her daughter’s outstanding experience in the MYL Program, Elizabeth joined the Board in 2009. She lives with her husband in Cape Elizabeth and is the mother of their son, Teddy and daughter, Marisa.

Sara “Cookie” Treible is an Assistant Director for Undergraduate Admission at the University of Southern Maine. She grew up outside of Rochester, NY. She earned her BA in Psychology from SUNY Fredonia, her MEd in Student Personnel Administration from Springfield College, and her MFA in Creative Writing from the Stonecoast MFA program at the University of Southern Maine. She has been involved with Maine Youth Leadership since 2002.

Frankee Chapa of MaineToday Digital joined the Maine Youth Leadership board in March of 2011 and attended MYL as an ambassador in 2000. She resides in Westbrook with her husband Brandon and their daughter August.

Since 1980, Maine Youth Leadership has worked with Maine youth to seek out, recognize and develop their leadership skills. Their goal is to motivate Maine’s future leaders and create a network of civic-minded students who will better their communities through volunteering. Maine Youth Leadership encourages and assists students at critical times in their quest for self- identification and development, providing give-and-take discussions with thought leaders and role models from across Maine society.
