U.S. Senate nominee to celebrate inclusion in Democratic Party national platform

What: Cynthia Dill news conference and rally for marriage equality
When: 1 p.m., Wednesday
Where: Portland City Hall front steps, Congress Street, Portland

PORTLAND — Cynthia Dill, Democratic nominee for U.S. Senate, will host a news conference and rally on Wednesday, Aug. 8, at 1 p.m. on the steps of Portland City Hall.

The focus: applauding the Democratic Party’s recent decision to include marriage equality in its draft national platform. Dill has been a longtime supporter of marriage equality in Maine and the civil rights issue will be decided by statewide ballot in November.

“It is important to celebrate the inclusion of this critical piece of civil rights language into the party’s national platform,” Dill said. “It represents, in stark relief, the core values that separate the Democratic Party from other political groups. We, as a national party, believe in civil rights and we fight for civil rights. No qualifiers.”

The unanimous decision by the drafting committee for the Democratic National Convention means that marriage equality will be presented as part of the party’s 2012 convention platform. Next step: The full platform committee votes, and it is presented to delegates at the Charlotte, N.C., convention.

Dill will be joined by former Maine State Housing Authority Executive Director Dale McCormick; and state Sen. and Democratic National Committeeman Phil Bartlett, D-Gorham, both Maine human rights leaders. The public is welcome, and numerous supporters are expected to attend.
