PORTLAND, ME – November 2, 2009 – Apothecary by Design and Zone Labs Inc. announced their first-ever team partnership with the Portland Pirates of the American Hockey League today. As an official performance and nutrition sponsor, Zone Labs and Apothecary by Design will work together to supply players and team trainers with educational resources, food, and supplement products, including Dr. Sears’ Zone Nutrition Bars, Dr. Sears’ Zone Nutrition Shakes, OmegaRx and Polyphenol Plus.

Apothecary by Design—Portland’s locally owned pharmacy—and Zone Labs Inc. –a leading functional foods and nutraceutical company based on the vision of Dr. Barry Sears, author of the best-selling Zone Diet book—have teamed up to serve as the leading nutraceutical and wellness resource in Portland: the Pirates sponsorship comes as part of the companies larger collaboration.

“Zone Labs is highly respected among top athletes and health professionals, and we are thrilled to complement and enhance our approach to player nutrition with both the science behind Zone Living products and the support of Apothecary by Design,” said Robert Frost, athletic trainer for the Portland Pirates.

The sponsorship of the Portland Pirates also extends Zone Diet’s nutrition and diet programs to the sports community and continues its growth in the elite performance category. In addition to a partnership with USA Triathlon, earlier this year, Zone Labs launched ZoneCompete.com – an interactive resource featuring instructional videos and health tips, athlete testimonials and high-quality foods and supplements. Zone Labs international sponsorships include the Garmin/Chipotle Pro-Cycling team, Stanford’s Mens Swim Team, and a variety of professional and endurance athletes including marathoner Dean Karnazes, triathletes Karen Smyers and Becky Lavelle, and cyclist Christian Vande Velde.

“Proper nutrition and hormonal balance are critical factors for athletes to perform at an optimal level,” said Jim Buchanan, chairman and CEO of Zone Labs Inc. “We are excited to support the Portland Pirates with high quality Zone products to help them reach the ultimate goal of an AHL championship.”

As a Pirates nutrition and performance sponsor, and the exclusive Portland retailer for Zone Labs, Apothecary by Design also furthers its work in the Portland community as a leader in comprehensive pharmacy services and wellness education.

“As an integrated pharmacy, we endeavor to be a resource in our community for both conventional and complementary therapies,” says Catherine Cloudman, Apothecary by Design principal. “We offer very extensive support for nutrition, not only for health and weight loss, but also for enhanced athletic performance. Zone’s commitment to clinical support of their high quality products fits perfectly within our model, and we’re thrilled to partner together in supporting both the Pirates and our larger Portland community.”

PORTLAND, ME – October 14, 2009 – Over 200 people will gather on the Maine State Pier on Saturday morning to take part in The Wine Flight 5k—a different kind of running event. Like a traditional 5k, participants will still run or walk a 3.1-mile route. Unlike a traditional 5k, there will be no chip timers strapped around ankles, and no time clock ticking above the finish chute. There won’t even be a prize for the individual who comes in first.

Instead, there will be food, costumes, wine, and an atmosphere that proves being active can be really fun.

The second annual Wine Flight 5k will take place in downtown Portland on October 17th at 9:30 a.m. The race will start with a ceremonial sabrage—the opening of a champagne bottle with a sword—by Maine’s Ambassadors of Food and Drink founder Margo Mallar (instead of the usual gun). Participants will start and finish on the Maine State Pier, embarking on a 3.1-mile scenic course around the East End and along the Eastern Promenade.

Between each mile-long loop, participants will pass through “Aid Stations” stocked with sample bites and tastes from local Maine vendors and markets. Each station will mimic the course of a meal and include foods such as cheese from Pineland Farms Creamery, cookies from Two Fat Cats Bakery, and pastries from Fit to Eat.

Just past the finish line, the run/walk will conclude with a Bordeaux wine tasting celebration hosted by the Pine Street Beverage Company. Along with an “awards ceremony” consisting of prizes given to those participants wearing the best food and wine-inspired costumes.

“The whole goal of the Wine Flight is to offer a fun alternative to the usual 5k,” says Tri-Maine’s Director Will Thomas. “We started with the run component and added in the food and wine features to make the event more relaxed. Then we removed the time element to eliminate pressure and create something that allows people in the community to come out and be active, social, and engaged.”

To add to the local food and wine spirit of the event, Ms. Mallar and the Maine Ambassadors of Food and Wine led a series of Wine Flight Training Runs on Tuesday nights in the months before the 5k. Participants met in Monument Square and ran or walked a 3-mile route around town before ending at a different Portland establishment to sample food and learn about wine.

Volunteers are still needed to help with the event. To sign up, contact info@tri-maine.com.

Sponsor support for the Wine Flight 5k comes from The Maine Running Company. Mensk—a non-profit Portland organization whose mission is to inspire and support personal, local, and regional action for the development of creative and sustainable communities—is the event beneficiary.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

PORTLAND, ME – October 8, 2009 – On Sunday morning, October 11th, one hundred athletes will gather at Sunday River to race in the second annual Mountain Epic. The 2009 event will take place at the height of the fall foliage season and showcase two new, challenging long-distance courses and a return to the infamous Mud Pit.

Athletes will compete in one of three courses of varying levels of degree. The 4-mile short course scales one peak; the middle-distance course spans 8-miles and crosses up and over five peaks; and the long course sends athletes on a grueling, 12-mile route, traversing eight peaks and ascending over 3,500 feet.

All three courses begin and end at Sunday River’s South Peak Lodge and offer some of the most spectacular and technical trail running in New England. Course terrain varies, moving from smooth dirt roads to rocky Jeep trails, grassy ski trails to bald-face rock, and gnarly single track to man-made mountain bike embankments. The finish chute includes a 200-yard obstacle course containing hurdles and the Mud Pit.

A post-race BBQ and celebration with live music from Worlds Collide follows the completion of the race. Spectators will also have the opportunity to hike and ride chair lifts, viewing the race, and the mountain vistas, from high North Peak points.

Mountain Epic runs in conjunction with Sunday River’s Fall Festival Weekend featuring outdoor concerts, horse wagon rides, hiking and mountain biking, wine and spirit tasting, fireworks, and the renowned Wife Carrying Competition. Full schedule and information can be found at sundayriver.com.

“This year’s Mountain Epic will offer something for everyone – from first-time trail runners to devoted adventure racers,” says Erik Boucher, Mountain Epic’s logistics coordinator. “The event not only showcases Sunday River’s rugged terrain, great fall scenery, and spirited mountain culture, but it also offers an unbelievable mountain running challenge that you can’t find anywhere else in Maine.”

Awards will be given to top three fastest overall individuals and age groupers in each race. Creative prizes will also be given out for the best Mud Pit entrances.

For more information, contact Amy VanHaren or visit mountain-epic.com.

The 2009 Lobsterman Triathlon and Aquabike will take place at Winslow Park in South Freeport, Maine on Saturday, September 19th.

PORTLAND, ME – September 14, 2009 – Tri-Maine’s Lobsterman Triathlon and Aquabike event will bring over 800 athletes to South Freeport on Saturday morning, September 19th. Acclaimed for having the “Best Scenery” of any triathlon in the country by Triathlete Magazine in 2008, the popular event sold out for 2009.

The race begins at 9:30 a.m. at Freeport’s ocean-side Winslow Park. Triathletes will swim 1.5-kilometers (.93 miles) in Casco Bay, head out on a 40-kilometer (24 mile) bike ride along the countryside of Freeport and Brunswick, and finish with a 10-kilometer (6.2 mile) “lollipop” run through the village of South Freeport. Aquabike competitors will follow the same swim and bike courses without the run, and all athletes will finish back at Winslow Park.

Following the completion of the race, local restaurant Gritty McDuff’s will host a classic lobsterbake. (More than 400 lobsters were served in 2008!) There will also be live entertainment, food options provided by Freeport’s Bow Street Market, and a LobsterKids Fun Run after the adult event.

The Lobsterman will feature both local athletes and competitors from more than 24 states and Canadian provinces.

“It’s exciting to see so many athletes coming to Maine to experience our stunning landscape and the some of the best in athletic competition,” says Will Thomas, Tri-Maine’s Executive Director. “We’re thrilled that the Lobsterman has become such a favored destination race and looking forward to another great event.”

Athletes Arrive at the Zone Urban Epic Finish Line Full of Smiles Despite Early Rain Showers

More than three hundred athletes brave early morning rain to compete in an exciting Zone Urban Epic event in downtown Portland

PORTLAND, ME – July 18, 2009 – Not even pouring rain and early rumbling thunder could deter the three hundred and thirty athletes who came to downtown Portland Saturday morning to race in the Zone Urban Epic Triathlon. Competitors finished strong despite early wet weather, and the rain stopped just in time for the exciting event and the post-race Festival on the Maine State Pier.

Local favorites and frequent Maine triathlon winners were the first to cross the finish line in both the mens and womens divisions. Kurt Perham, of Brunswick, Maine came in victorious with a time of 1:12:25; and Catherine Sterling, of Kents Hill, Maine was first among women with a time of 1:15:04. Both athletes were also winners of the Pirate Triathlon in June and the PolarBear Triathlon in May.

Athletes stood in the drizzling rain at East End Beach before starting the race at 8:50 a.m. After completing a ½-mile out-and-back swim in Casco Bay, followed by .5-mile run down the East End Trail to the main transition area located inside Portland Yacht Services at 58 Fore Street, racers embarked on 13-mile bike course up to the Eastern Promenade and down to Baxter Boulevard, completing two loops along Back Cove before heading back to the TA along the same route. They ended the challenge with a 3.7-mile out-and-back run along the Eastern Promenade and a big finish on the Maine State Pier.

Highlights from the Festival included live music by the Jason Spooner Trio, a Smuttynose Brewing Company Beer Garden, Mammut Rock Wall, massages by Head Games Salon and The Landing Center, and local food and merchandise vendors. Athletes ranged in age from 14-69 and traveled to the event from 14 states and Canada.

“It’s a wonderful thing for the city of Portland to have such an exciting celebration of health and wellness,” said Jim Buchanan, CEO of title sponsor Zone Labs Inc. and local Portland resident. “We’re thrilled to be a part of it, and we’re especially thrilled for all the athletes who trained so hard for this day and for all our Zone customers who choose to take part in such an active lifestyle.”

“Today turned out to be an absolutely wonderful day,” says Urban Epic Race Director Will Thomas. “We had a very safe event thanks to support from the City, the police, and all our community volunteers and not even a little unstable weather could deter this inspiring group of athletes from getting across the finish line. Portland just provided another opportunity for everyone to be more Epic.”

Seventeen kids competed in the first year of the Aquarun Urban Epic Kids Race presented by Big Brothers Big Sisters of Southern Maine and more than twenty 4-6 year olds dashed for the finish in the fun run. Over $2,600 was raised for the charity.

Title sponsor Zone Labs Inc. is a leading functional foods and nutraceutical company based out of Danvers, Massachusetts. Additional sponsorship support for the event is provided by Peak Performance Multisport, Orthopaedic Associates, Smuttynose Brewing Company, The Maine SWITCH & Mainetoday.com, The Landing Center for Healing Arts, Head Games Salon, Mammut, Sunday River, and Sugarloaf. The ZUE is a USA Triathlon sanctioned event.

Live results for both the adult and kids race can be viewed at www.allsportsevents.com. For specific event details or a complete list of winners, contact Amy VanHaren at 207-221-5420 x 5.

Over three hundred athletes set to race in the third year of the Zone Urban Epic Triathlon and Festival

Saturday, July 18, 2009 at 8:30 a.m.
Portland, Maine

PORTLAND, ME – July 6, 2009 – The third annual Zone Urban Epic Triathlon and Festival will take place in downtown Portland on Saturday, July 18. Three hundred fifty athletes will gather at East End Beach at 8:30 a.m. to compete in the ½-mile swim, 13-mile bike, and 3.7-mile run event.

The enhanced 2009 Zone Urban Epic (ZUE) event will feature a new finish on the Maine State Pier with a prominent post-race festival that includes a Smuttynose Beer Garden, Mammut climbing wall, local food and retail vendors, and live music by the Jason Spooner Trio. The spectator-friendly festival is free and open to the public.

Racers will start at 8:30 a.m. at East End Beach with a ½-mile out-and-back swim in Casco Bay, followed by .5-mile run down the East End Trail to the main transition area located inside Portland Yacht Services at 58 Fore Street. Next, they will embark on a 13-mile bike course up to the Eastern Promenade and down to Baxter Boulevard, completing two loops along Back Cove before heading back to the TA along the same route. Athletes end with a 3.7-mile out-and-back run along the Eastern Promenade and a big finish on the Maine State Pier.

Also new in 2009, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Southern Maine will present an Urban Epic Kids Race following the adult event. Kids ages 4-6 can compete in a 200-yard-dash Fun Run, and kids from 7-13 can fundraise and compete in an Aquarun (swim-run) race. Both races will finish on the Pier, where there will be a special family-oriented play and learn area. All proceeds will benefit Big Brothers Big Sisters.

Seventy percent of the athletes hail from Maine, while 30 percent will be traveling in from 14 states and Canada. Athletes compete both individually and in relay teams and range in ability from first-timers to seasoned pros. Mixed into the ZUE field of athletes will be competitors in the Epic Restaurant and Bar Challenge. In relay teams of three, local restaurant and bar establishments will face off for the title of “Most Epic Restaurant/Bar” in Portland.

The Zone Urban Epic will again focus on minimizing its environmental impact on the city and renewing certification as a sustainable athletic event through the Council for Responsible Sport. Bruce Rayner, the Chief Green Officer of Athletes for a Fit Planet and a local sustainable events coordinator, will oversee implementation of the race’s green initiatives; while Climate Counts, a nonprofit organization working toward reducing global warming, will provide a ZUE Green Team to sweep the post-race run course for trash.

Later Saturday night, athletes, spectators, and the general public are encouraged to attend the final Epic celebration of the evening: The Smuttynose Après Epic Party taking place at Novare Res at 5:30 p.m.

Inaugural entreverge Awards Party to Recognize and Celebrate Portland Entrepreneurs

New entreverge Awards to recognize and celebrate entrepreneurship and innovation in the greater Portland-area business community

PORTLAND, ME – June 23, 2009 – On Thursday, June 25, the inaugural entreverge Awards Party will honor local entrepreneurs for their innovation and contributions to the Maine business community. Five award winners will be selected from the 52 local nominees and recognized at the evening celebration at the Port City Music Hall.

The entreverge Awards were created as a collaborative project to honor emerging entrepreneurs. entreverge is a nonprofit organization that connects high-potential, emerging entrepreneurs in greater Portland with resources, relationships, and publicity to help grow their businesses. The Awards are an extension of entreverge’s work, led by PROPEL (Portland’s premier young professionals networking group), in partnership with the Portland Regional Chamber of Commerce and numerous local businesses, business groups, nonprofits, and social networks.

The 52 entrepreneur nominees were obtained through outreach from PROPEL, the Chamber, and over 20 local organizations. They are diverse, and range from a web designer to a health care consulting firm, from a mead maker to a recycled clothing designer, and from a bakery to a sports social club. (A complete list of nominees is available at www.entreverge.com.)

Winners selected for the entreverge Awards were considered by PROPEL on a number of criteria, including coachability, impact, and scalable vision for their business and their commitment to a triple bottom line—the people, place, and prosperity of Maine. The five winners will receive face-time with Portland’s leading business figures and a package of pro-bono consultation, services, and products volunteered by local artistic, finance, IT, legal, marketing, web experts, and other business service providers.

“The unique design of entreverge has provided a vehicle for bringing together an exciting group of motivated individuals that otherwise might never have the opportunity to interact,” says entreverge director Johann Sabbath. “We see this event as a means of developing strong business communities, by transcending generational/economic gaps and creating a shared sense of investment in the success of our emerging entrepreneurs and leaders.”

Doors at the Awards Party will open for a reception at 5:30 p.m. with catered hors d’oeuvres by Ian Hayward and a cash bar. The entreverge awards will be presented at 7:00 p.m., followed by live music performances by the Jason Spooner Band and Adam and the Waxmen. The party is open to the public, and tickets can be purchased in advance at www.entreverge.com or by calling the Portland Regional Chamber at 207-772-2811.

entreverge is made possible by sponsorship from Bangor Savings Bank, Swardlick Marketing Group, the University of Maine Farmington, Mainebiz, and WCYY.
