Portland vertigo sufferers can find relief before summer without needles or drugs. Portland Chiropractic Neurology brings vertigo and dizziness symptom relief through Vestibular rehabilitation treatment and exercises.

The most common cause of dizziness is Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV), which creates dizziness during head movement. This happens when tiny crystals in the inner ear (vestibular canals) become dislodged and excessively activate the tiny hair cells that send signals to our brain about our head position. Treatment for this is accomplished by repositioning of the canals in your inner ear to drain these crystals and effectively cure the dizziness. It occurs most commonly in the posterior canal. This often occurs due to whiplash or head trauma, but can also occur at random.

More than 70% of dizziness is treated by a primary care doctor, and less than 10% are evaluated by a specialist.

In 1998, disequilibrium was the 2nd most common cause for medical visits, with an average stay of 4.3 days.

In chronic balance problems, only vestibular rehabilitation has been shown to improve balance function and performance when compared with medical therapy or general exercises.

Dizziness can also be caused by trauma to the neck, when there is a shift in the impulses coming from the muscles, joints and tendons in the neck and going to the brain. Dizziness caused by neck problems is called cervical vertigo. The degree of dizziness varies from fleeting and mild to long lasting and debilitating.

Dr. Aaron MacArthur at Portland Chiropractic Neurology is treating many of these patients with great results. Other causes of dizziness occur and are evaluated for in office. “Treatment depends on the cause of your dizziness,” says Dr. MacArthur. “The appropriate referral will be made when needed.” If you are unsure what type of dizziness you have, please don’t hesitate to get evaluated. Treatment is safe and effective, often taking less than two to three office visits to reduce dizziness.

Have you seen the insurance agency “responsibility” commercials that show a chain of people helping other people? One person offers a random act of kindness which creates a ripple effect of good feelings through the community.

That’s what Trish Moulton, Owner of the Dance Studio of Maine said it felt like last week when dancers from her studio performed for the Portland Center for Assisted Living. Moulton encourages her dancers to volunteer each year. This year, dance student Sally Aube sang the National Anthem to kick off the performance for 30 residents. The dancers, ranging in age from 8 to 15 performed a tap piece choreographed by Maria McInnis and created their own choreography for several numbers.

“Some of the residents are former dancers and dance instructors,” said Trish Moulton. “The girls really brought them joy. I think it is so important to encourage the girls to connect with people in their community. I was so glad they could all share that experience together.”

Dancers included Molly, Sally, Kelly, and Maggy Aube, Kate and Meaghan Gilbert, Kate and Grace Andrews, Alexis Fotter, and Makenzie and Kerrigan Goudreau.

For the fifth consecutive year, the Perform for a Cure event has joined together more than 200 performers, activists and youth from around the state to raise money for cancer research.

This year, Natalie Parent, a Portland resident and tap dancer at the Dance Studio of Maine, had her first opportunity to help fundraise and participate. Natalie has been dancing for 10 years and has performed all over New England. Over the past few months, her family has struggled as her grandfather was diagnosed with cancer.

Natalie and her tap team raised money for the event and cancer research through ticket sales and performed a version of “Footloose” at Perform for a Cure held on April 11th. It was the first time her grandfather got to see her perform this piece, which has made her participation even more meaningful.

When asked about her experience at the event, Natalie replied “I was so happy to be apart of it, and that my grandfather was there to watch. He has been driving me to rehearsal for a long time and he finally got to see me dance!”

Portland, Maine – With warmer weather fast approaching, your time on the road is likely to increase. In fact, the American Automobile Association reports that a quarter billion road trips take place in the summer. While summer road trips can be amazingly fun, it is important to remember that with an increase in extra cars on the road, your chances of accidents, and driving related injuries also increase.

One of the most common injuries associated with riding in a car is whiplash, which is caused by sudden movement to the head and neck. If left untreated, whiplash victims can develop more serious complications years after an accident. Whiplash is most commonly received from riding in a car that is struck form behind, or collides with another vehicle. When the head is suddenly jerked back and forth beyond its normal limits, the muscles and ligaments supporting the spine can be stretched or torn.

Around 70% of those suffering from whiplash complain of headache. “Many patients report that the pain is constant, but it could be on and off,” says Dr. Aaron MacArthur of Portland Chiropractic Neurology. “Headaches are often the result of tightened, tensed muscles trying to keep the head stable.” These are due to joint and muscle injury that occur during the accident. Other symptoms of whiplash can include neck pain and stiffness, difficulty swallowing, dizziness, numbness, or pain in the arms, shoulder blades, legs, feet, and hands. If you experience any of these symptoms, play it safe and get a chiropractic check up.

It is important that a chiropractor evaluate your spine as a whole after an accident. If left untreated, patients will often develop arthritis in the damaged areas of the spine. “Your exact treatment plan will depend on your injury, but will include some combination of spinal manipulations with stretches soft tissues and stimulates the nervous system to return normal motion to the spine,” says Dr. MacArthur.

If you have been in an accident, or have questions about whiplash, please see your chiropractor for more information.

Falmouth, ME— A Perfect Smile, a cosmetic and general dentistry practice in Falmouth, Maine, has recently gained certification in a new patient-friendly orthodontic treatment. The practice is now offering Invisalign Express, an expedited version of the popular wireless braces treatment for orthodontic patients.

Invisalign Express provides the cosmetic appeal of straight teeth in significantly less time than traditional braces. The treatment is ideal for patients who need minor movement and corrects any crooked or crowded teeth as well as spaces and gaps that negatively affect the patient’s smile. The final results are a gorgeous smile with fast results.

Many people that want to correct one or two teeth in misalignment become discouraged when they find out that orthodontic treatment often takes two years comments. Invisalign Express however, is a great solution for these individuals. Average treatment time to straighten a crooked smile is six to twelve months.

“Adults and older teenagers are the best candidates for Invisalign because this correction is only focusing on cosmetics, not the bite corrections often needed in a growing child,” states Dr. Robert Nelson.

Invisalign reduces patient anxiety towards braces treatment, by utilizing clear aligners, rather than traditional metal brackets and wire. Individuals interested in Invisalign or the Express program should consult with Dr. Nelson or their dentist to discover if they could be candidates for this innovative treatment.

Alternatives to Invisalign are traditional metal braces or porcelain veneers which provide the look of a healthy, straight, beautiful smile.

Portland Chiropractic Neurology has recently begun offering some much needed pain and abnormal movement relief to patients with Parkinson’s disease. Parkinson’s is a degenerative disorder of the brain that results from the destruction of cells that produce dopamine. Symptoms include rigid muscles, abnormal movement in the upper extremity and postural instability. While the exact cause of Parkinson’s disease continues to be investigated, some of the latest research shows that accidents involving head trauma have been linked to the disease, which affects the Substantia Nigra at the level of the Mesencephalon in the brain stem.

Dr. Aaron MacArthur and his team at Portland Chiropractic Neurology offer chiropractic and neurological treatments that can help patients with Parkinson’s disease by correcting the spinal misalignments and activating the parts of the brain that are affected with Parkinson’s disease. After nerve irritation has been removed, proper communication between the brain and spinal cord is restored. This activates the Mesencephalon and fuels the proper function of the Basal Ganglia, reducing tremors and increasing Cortical stimulation. “While there is still a lot to be learned about Parkinson’s disease,” adds Dr. MacArthur, “many patients have reported better neck movement, fewer tremors, and the ability to stand and walk for longer periods of time.”
