A WISE AND WHIMSICAL COMEDY ABOUT
LOVE, MARRIAGE & MISCOMMUNICATION
The Public Theatre is proud to present the New England Premiere of The Language Archive by Julia Cho, a wise and whimsical comedy about love, marriage and miscommunication playing Jan 27 – Feb 5. “We’re thrilled to be one of the first professional theatres in the country to produce this play since its New York debut”, says Artistic Director Christopher Schario. “We fell in love with this show when we saw it in New York, and we believe our audience will fall in love with it as well. If you’ve ever been married, or in a relationship, or suffered from unrequited love, I guarantee you will see yourself in this play, laugh at yourself in this play, and probably have a fascinating conversation on the way home.”
For anyone who has ever struggled with the language barrier between men and women, this thought-provoking and compassionate new comedy speaks volumes about the most universal, mysterious and insane language of all; the language of love. The play, which won the prestigious Susan Smith Blackburn Prize, tells the story of George, a brilliant linguist who is unable to find the right words to say to his wife. Meanwhile, at work, he’s also in danger of losing his chance to record the dying language of Elloway because its last two speakers – an elderly married couple – are in the midst of a fight, and they refuse to speak their native tongue until they resolve their argument.

This wonderful new comedy explores our need to connect, our struggle to communicate, and our search to find the words for what lies in our hearts. “At heart”, says Schario, “it’s a story about people looking for someone who speaks their language. We’re all looking for someone who hears us, and gets us – not just the words themselves but what’s said between the lines.”

Dawn McAndrews, the recently appointed Artistic Director at The Theater at Monmouth, will direct this production starring Equity actors James Hoban as George, Janet Mitchko as Mary, Tarah Flanagan as Emma, Andrea Gallo as Alta and Edward Furs as Reston. The set design is by Michael Reidy, lighting design by Bart Garvey and costumes by Jonna Klaiber

The Language Archive will be performed at The Public Theatre, Lewiston/Auburn’s Professional Theatre, Jan 27, 28, 29, Feb 2, 3, 4, 5. Performance Times are: Thurs/Fri 7:30pm, Sat at 8pm, Sun 2pm, with an added matinee performance on Saturday, Feb 4 at 2pm. Adults $18, Youth $5, (18 and under), Group Rate (10+) $15. For more information or tickets call The Public Theatre Box Office at 782-3200 or visit www.thepublictheatre.org.

Local Business Turns $7,000 Gift into $9,000 in Heating Assistance for Maine Families in Need

Peter Fendler shivered as he got into his car on Thursday morning. The overnight temperature had dropped to the low teens in Cumberland, ME, down from a balmy 52 degrees the day before. As he switched on his radio and heard reports on the continued shortfall in Federal and State Funds for low income heating assistance, he wondered how people less fortunate than he survived the cold Maine winters without adequate heat.

Entering his office at Norton Financial • Insurance in Cumberland, he resolved to do something to see if he and his company could make a difference. “I started doing some online research, and I came upon several organizations that are committed to helping Mainers stay warm. I started emailing my business partners, and they responded with a resounding, ‘Let’s do it!”‘

So, today Norton Insurance • Financial made five gifts totaling $7,000 to provide heating assistance to Mainers. Norton contributed $2,000 to the Stephen and Tabitha King Foundation in Bangor. That foundation matches all gifts up to $70,000 received to provide heating assistance for Bangor area residents. Norton also contributed a total of $5,000 to Community Concepts Fuel Assistance Program and three Maine Community Action Agencies – Waldo Community Action Partners, Western Maine Community Action, and Penquis – all of which provide heating assistance programs in their communities.

“With the matching gift from the King Foundation, we were able to turn our $7,000 gift into a $9,000 gift,” said Fendler, President of Norton Financial. “As financial and insurance professionals, we just love it when we can produce that kind of return on our investment. We encourage other Maine business who have been fortunate during difficult times to do the same.”

About Bhagavan Das

Teacher, performer, counter-cultural icon, lover of God: Bhagavan Das is as rich and manifold as Existence itself.

Bhagavan Das is one of the last living cultural icon of the 60′s. As Ram Das’s mentor (author of Be Here Now) he ushered in the New Age Spiritual Movement being the first Kirtan Artist in America. His groundbreaking album “Ah” (1971) produced by Jimmi Hendrix’s manager Michael Jeffrey’s was the first World Music album from Electric Ladyland. Bhagavan Das has also toured with Allen Ginsberg, opened for the Grateful Dead and sang with Bob Dylan.

Living as a sadhu in India for six years Bhagavan Das studied the ancient science of Nada Yoga under the guidance and direction of his Guru Neem Karoli Baba. Nada Yoga is the path of devotion to the inner sound current as a means to God Realization. Alan Watt’s himself saying in a Rolling Stone review of the Album “Ah” that “Bhagavan Das is truly a Master of Nada Yoga”.

Bhagavan Das’s rare and sacred offering to this world is like a singing open heart heralding the Guru’s Grace through the vehicle of Sound.

Permits to build privately-owned housing units in August rose 3.2 percent above July’s estimates and 7.8 percent above last year, according to new residential construction statistics from the U.S. Census Bureau and the Department of Housing and Urban Development. Single-family building permits rose 2.5 percent above the month before. Despite the rise in permits for future construction, housing starts fell in August, down 5.0 percent from July’s revised pace. The decline was due, in large part, to a 13.5 percent drop in multifamily housing. Single-family home construction was down just 1.4 percent from July.

Lewiston, Maine (September 08, 2011) –The Maine Center for Creativity invites the public to network together September 21 from 5:30pm-7: 30pm at the USM Lewiston/Auburn campus to collaborate and meet for purposes of developing new ideas and learning more about the creative work happening in L/A.

When: September 21, from 5:30pm to 7:30pm

Where: USM Lewiston/Auburn Campus Function Room 170 (same floor as art gallery)

Highlights: Presentation by architect Christopher Campbell and attorney Chelsea Callanan, professional networking, and a cash bar.

Cost: Free and open to public

RSVP’s to intern@mainecenterforcreativity.org or by calling (207) 730-0694

This networking event is hosted by the Maine Center for Creativity and USM Lewiston/Auburn who are working in collaboration with the Androscoggin Chamber of Commerce, L/A Arts, and the Atrium Gallery.

Hear a brief presentation by Christopher Campbell, architect and Chelsea Callanan, attorney followed by a networking session with other professionals who value creativity in their work and lives. Christopher Campbell is an architect who has experience finding and creating incubator space for creative individuals to work. Chelsea Callanan is a corporate and intellectual property attorney that focuses her practice on working with creative businesses; she is also a Lewiston native and is in the midst of opening a creative business in Auburn with her sister.

The collaborating organizations recognize Maine’s potential as a state where the creative industries can provide vital growth opportunities for today and for generations to come. According to the Creative Economy Report 2010 launched in March 2011 at the United Nations, creative industries have shown more resilience to the impact of the global economic crisis than traditional manufacturing industries. Global exports of creative goods and services—ideas and creativity-centered industries such as arts and crafts, audiovisuals, books, design, films, music, new media, visual and performing arts— have more than doubled from 2002 to 2008, reaching nearly US$600 billion. This upcoming networking event aims to build from this momentum and grow Maine’s creative economy while increasing employment within Maine.

The Maine Center for Creativity (MCC) is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) led by a volunteer board of directors. Founded in May 2005, MCC is committed to nurturing innovative companies and people in Maine by developing projects and programs that support the growth of creative industries and the arts. Among its educational and creative projects, MCC is organizing Art All Around™, an international design competition to paint the Sprague Energy tanks in South Portland, the Creative Toolbox Series, and Pecha Kucha events in Maine. For more information, please visit www.mainecenterforcreativity.org
