Kingfield, MAINE (November 22, 2011) – Bette Davis, Debbie Reynolds, Loretta Young, Josephine Baker, Patti Page, Carol Channing and many other stars are currently reappearing as paper dolls published by Paper Studio Press of Kingfield, Maine. Some of the star subjects are still performing and others are gone but not forgotten. Publisher Jenny Taliadoros works with a stable of freelance artists to create glamorous paper doll books for collectors and nostalgia buffs. Every star subject is carefully researched and each book is officially authorized by the star herself or her estate. The books usually feature two or three dolls with eight pages of outfits to cut out and dress the figures. The fashions included in the books represent the star’s career including many memorable film costumes. Also included is a brief biography to refresh memories of bygone careers and lives in the spotlight of fame.

Thanks to the Internet and social networking, paper doll enthusiasts are a growing group. The nostalgic appeal is fuelling a renaissance of the once-popular childhood past time. Celebrity paper doll books have been around for decades and they enjoyed a peak in popularity in the 1940s and ‘50s. Some of the stars, such as Bette Davis, who were subjects then, are being recreated by contemporary artists like famed fashion illustrator, Jim Howard. Debbie Reynolds was the subject of several paper doll books in the ‘50s and illustrator David Wolfe has created a new book depicting the enduring star at the beginning of her long career when she starred in hits such as “Singin’ in the Rain.” Marilyn Henry has been producing movie star paper dolls for several decades and she is highly regarded in the community of collectors. Her latest subject is elegant star of films and television, Loretta Young and her next paper doll will be ‘40s film actress, Joan Fontaine.

The inventory of Paper Studio Press, housed in Taliadoros’ Kingfield home office, could well revive the famous tagline coined by MGM Studios long ago. “More stars than in heaven” used to refer to the star roster of the famed Hollywood Studio. But Paper Studio Press has an equally impressive line-up that includes Marilyn Monroe, Marlene Dietrich, Jane Powell, Ida Lupino, Dorothy Lamour, Leslie Caron, Doris Day and even Phyllis Diller.

The entire catalog of paper dolls from Paper Studio Press can be viewed on paperstudiopress.com.

About Bhagavan Das

Teacher, performer, counter-cultural icon, lover of God: Bhagavan Das is as rich and manifold as Existence itself.

Bhagavan Das is one of the last living cultural icon of the 60′s. As Ram Das’s mentor (author of Be Here Now) he ushered in the New Age Spiritual Movement being the first Kirtan Artist in America. His groundbreaking album “Ah” (1971) produced by Jimmi Hendrix’s manager Michael Jeffrey’s was the first World Music album from Electric Ladyland. Bhagavan Das has also toured with Allen Ginsberg, opened for the Grateful Dead and sang with Bob Dylan.

Living as a sadhu in India for six years Bhagavan Das studied the ancient science of Nada Yoga under the guidance and direction of his Guru Neem Karoli Baba. Nada Yoga is the path of devotion to the inner sound current as a means to God Realization. Alan Watt’s himself saying in a Rolling Stone review of the Album “Ah” that “Bhagavan Das is truly a Master of Nada Yoga”.

Bhagavan Das’s rare and sacred offering to this world is like a singing open heart heralding the Guru’s Grace through the vehicle of Sound.

Our chairman Ron Raymond and our Executive Director Kristin Benedix are pleased to announce the grand opening of The Progress Center’s Community Kitchen, which will serve the Oxford Hills’ region as a shared-use kitchen and meeting facility while simultaneously providing food security to local people. Located at 35 Cottage Street, Norway, our newly renovated facility includes a state-of-the-art kitchen, commercial food storage and space for 200 patrons to dine three times per week.

Our Community Kitchen started in 2008 when our employee Liz Blaquiere recognized that more and more local people were struggling as the businesses they worked for downsized or, worse, closed their doors for good. Liz came to us and made a compelling case for a volunteer kitchen. We at The Progress Center agreed and a plan was formed. 40 meals were served that first day in space at a local church, and by the fourth month we were serving near or at capacity of 125 meals per night. The dinners soon became a gathering place for people of all ages, a place where individuals and families not only enjoyed a good meal but also the camaraderie of old and new friends.

Recognizing it as a great start but knowing more needed to be done, we began plans for a larger and more permanent solution. As those plans began to gel, farmers and small businesses suggested they could supplement their incomes if only they had access to a licensed kitchen facility. By providing affordable kitchen rentals, our Community Kitchen would help farmers create jams, breads, and other value added products. Our kitchen could also provide cake decorators, caterers, and specialty food entrepreneurs with a location to create their product lines. Their rentals would also help our kitchen with ongoing expenses: truly a win-win.

As our Community Kitchen program grows to 600 meals per week and develops other shared-use projects, we foresee as many as 30 individuals with disabilities will be gainfully employed or
retained as volunteers, with all enjoying the wellbeing and self-confidence that comes from having a job and knowing you’ve done it well.

Three years and $240,00 later, Liz Blaquiere’s dream has become a reality: on September 29th at 3:00pm, the ribbon will be cut and the public invited in to see our Community Kitchen.

USDA Rural Development State Director Virginia Manuel said, “I am pleased that USDA Rural Development could provide funding to such a remarkable organization as The Progress Center and congratulate all the partners that made this expansion possible. It is commendable that this community-based organization is making such a difference in the lives of the people in the rural communities it serves. The Community Kitchen will also support the USDA’s Know Your Farmer Know Your Food Initiative that promotes locally grown foods. The Progress Center is a huge asset that serves multiple purposes including providing a place where freshly grown produce can be prepared for local consumption and dining.”

John Williams, Executive Director of the Oxford Hills Chamber of Commerce had this to say about the Community Kitchen. “This is a fantastic addition that will meet several critical needs in our communities. The new Community Kitchen will provide even more meals to those who continue to struggle in the challenging economic environment while helping employ more individuals with disabilities and at the same time also provide a place where local farmers can come and create many more food products enhancing their own income and helping this new state of the art facility pay for itself. What a wonderful opportunity for the citizens, businesses and non-profit organizations in the region!”

The undying gratitude of The Progress Center is extended to the many private foundations, the Department of Economic and Community Development, the US Department of Agriculture – Rural Development as well as those business and citizens of the local area who recognized the need and came forward with their financial support. In addition to the CDBC and the USDA, The Progress Center would like to thank Advance Auto, Lee Auto Malls, Bancroft Contracting, Paris Farmers Union, Oxford Plains Speedway, Oxford Networks, Katey Coffin, Bisco Property Management, Crossway Family Dental, Erin Bryant, Black Bear Entertainment including Jim Boldebook, Suzanne and Rupert Grover, Bob Bahre, and Bob Cott.

For more information on the Grand Opening please contact Priscilla at 743-8049 ext 266 or by email at priscillaburnette@progresscentermaine.org. For more information on the Community Kitchen please contact Lee at 739-6190 or by email at leebarker@progresscentermaine.org

Shonna Adams has been with The Progress Center for six years and has expertise in many areas. She was recently promoted to Director of Residential Services. Prior to this new position she was the House Manager at the Karla Jacobson Home. Her new responsibilities include overseeing Residential Services, Shared Living and Home Supports.

Ashleigh Barker has been promoted to Supervisor of Case Management. A graduate of The University of Southern Maine, she was a Case Manger prior to her new position.

Cherie Wilson, Sue Bone and Kathy Brown are now house managers at the three residential homes operated by The Progress Center. Cherie has been with The Progress Center for fifteen years, most recently as a DSP/CRMA at the Karla Jacobson Home before becoming the house manager at that facility. Prior to becoming the House Manager at the Spring Street Home, Sue, a nine year employee was the Home Supports Manager. Kathy, a five year employee at TPC and former Manager of Community Supports is the House Manger at the Frederick Avenue Home.

“This unique experience will build more than a strong resume as they gain confidence and raise money for their school,” says Derek Pierce, Principal at CBHS. “Over the past five seasons, the Pirates have helped raise more than $25,000 for the Casco Bay High School’s library and technology needs.”

CBHS’ group, Pirate Productions, Inc., worked with the Pirates’ staff, producing a logo, a finalized mission statement and a vision statement. They also developed a business plan, which they presented to a volunteer from a local bank for review.

In addition to the hands-on business lessons with the Pirates, the students participated in JA in a Day, a day-long workshop where they interacted with local business leaders and gained “minds-on” experience. Showcasing their efforts, sophomore Ben Smith and freshmen Dan Hall and Jessica Jamison presented to the Marketing and Business Development departments at JobsInTheUS.com (parent company of JobsInME.com).

Last January, Smith was the top salesperson in the Company Program and was offered a year-long internship by the Pirates, where he is still employed.

The program culminates as the students perform game operations for the Portland Pirates’ Junior Achievement Night, presented by UNUM, on January 22, 2011, when the Pirates host the Providence Bruins at the Cumberland County Civic Center.
