About Bhagavan Das

Teacher, performer, counter-cultural icon, lover of God: Bhagavan Das is as rich and manifold as Existence itself.

Bhagavan Das is one of the last living cultural icon of the 60′s. As Ram Das’s mentor (author of Be Here Now) he ushered in the New Age Spiritual Movement being the first Kirtan Artist in America. His groundbreaking album “Ah” (1971) produced by Jimmi Hendrix’s manager Michael Jeffrey’s was the first World Music album from Electric Ladyland. Bhagavan Das has also toured with Allen Ginsberg, opened for the Grateful Dead and sang with Bob Dylan.

Living as a sadhu in India for six years Bhagavan Das studied the ancient science of Nada Yoga under the guidance and direction of his Guru Neem Karoli Baba. Nada Yoga is the path of devotion to the inner sound current as a means to God Realization. Alan Watt’s himself saying in a Rolling Stone review of the Album “Ah” that “Bhagavan Das is truly a Master of Nada Yoga”.

Bhagavan Das’s rare and sacred offering to this world is like a singing open heart heralding the Guru’s Grace through the vehicle of Sound.

The Winthrop Education Corporation (http://winthropedcorp.org) recently reached a significant milestone. Between 1999 and 2010 the non-profit has given more than $285-thousand dollars to Winthrop schools. In 2010 alone the organization provided $4500 worth of grants in support of programs in the Winthrop School Department.

Winthrop Education Corporation (WEC) Board President Victoria Christopher says their history of giving is made possible due to the generous support of the community. “Each year private citizens and the business community come through and support us. Some of the larger contributors continue to give what they can, but our base comes from those who can give $75 or $100.”

Christopher acknowledges that the tough economic times have had an impact on their fundraising efforts, but she believes those filling out grant applications are also very aware of the current economic climate. “Over time, the types of applications we are seeing have changed. More and more we are being asked to help purchase classroom items like drawing tablets, general classroom supplies, and supporting Day of Caring activities in Winthrop. There was even a request to help purchase stair risers for the grade school.”

In addition to private contributions, WEC also raises funds through performances at the Winthrop Performing Arts Center, which the group helped raise funds to construct. The 450 seat performing arts center is used by Winthrop schools and has recently hosted national touring acts such as Jonathan Edwards and the Lovin’ Spoonful as well as piano concerts by local musicians.

To learn more about the Winthrop Education Corp. visit them on line at http://winthropedcorp.org or on Facebook at http://www.facebook.com/WinthropEdCorp.

ROCKPORT: The Camden Rockport Lincolnville Chamber of Commerce will be hosting some very special guests on March 7th, 6pm at the Camden Hills Regional High School. The Harlem Rockets, a talented group of basketball entertainers who combine incredible showtime basketball skills and family-friendly comedy will face the Harbor Hoopsters.

Having played over 2500 games in 16 years without a single defeat, the Harlem Rockets offer something for everyone to enjoy. Sports enthusiasts will be intrigued by the athleticism and size of the Rockets.

Basketball aficionados will be dazzled by the ball-handling wizardry of Terry “The Magician” McKenzie, who played at Western Texas State University, and who is a former Harlem Globetrotter. Terry’s ball-handling skills keep opponents back-peddling and the audience on their feet. Satiated by the game and left awestruck by the high flying dunks by Anthony “Big Footage” Gordon.

And since this is comedy basketball, the Harlem Rockets present to you showman Tex Barnwell, “The Zaniest One of All” and who keeps the crowd engaged with his many tricks. Tex will go down in history as one of show basketball’s all-time great show-man!!!

The Harlem Rockets incorporate the audience, especially children, into the show and are always available to meet the fans and give autographs at halftime and after the game.

For this special event the Midcoast’s own dream team The Harbor Hoopsters have graciously agreed to face the Harlem Rockets. The Harbor Hoopsters players include local residents from all walks of life and varying degrees of hardwood floor prowess. Needless to say, our brave local heroes fancy their chances against the fancy footwork and trickery of the Harlem Rockets. The only way to see who will prevail is to be there on the night. The entire evening of fun, laughs and entertainment is sponsored in part by Bar Harbor Bank & Trust, the Country Inn at Camden/Rockport, Point Lookout Resort, Windjammer Realty, and Gosline Insurance-The Pease Agency.

Tickets for what promises to be a fun-filled evening for the community are available at the Camden Rockport Lincolnville Chamber of Commerce: $10 for adults and $8 for under-18s in advance, and $12 for adults and $10 for under-18s on the door. Reserve yours by contacting Alicia Bagnall at 236-4404 or abagnall@camdenme.org, by visiting the CRL Chamber office on Camden’s Public Landing Monday-Friday, 9am to 5pm, or purchase at the door.
