Local Business Turns $7,000 Gift into $9,000 in Heating Assistance for Maine Families in Need

Peter Fendler shivered as he got into his car on Thursday morning. The overnight temperature had dropped to the low teens in Cumberland, ME, down from a balmy 52 degrees the day before. As he switched on his radio and heard reports on the continued shortfall in Federal and State Funds for low income heating assistance, he wondered how people less fortunate than he survived the cold Maine winters without adequate heat.

Entering his office at Norton Financial • Insurance in Cumberland, he resolved to do something to see if he and his company could make a difference. “I started doing some online research, and I came upon several organizations that are committed to helping Mainers stay warm. I started emailing my business partners, and they responded with a resounding, ‘Let’s do it!”‘

So, today Norton Insurance • Financial made five gifts totaling $7,000 to provide heating assistance to Mainers. Norton contributed $2,000 to the Stephen and Tabitha King Foundation in Bangor. That foundation matches all gifts up to $70,000 received to provide heating assistance for Bangor area residents. Norton also contributed a total of $5,000 to Community Concepts Fuel Assistance Program and three Maine Community Action Agencies – Waldo Community Action Partners, Western Maine Community Action, and Penquis – all of which provide heating assistance programs in their communities.

“With the matching gift from the King Foundation, we were able to turn our $7,000 gift into a $9,000 gift,” said Fendler, President of Norton Financial. “As financial and insurance professionals, we just love it when we can produce that kind of return on our investment. We encourage other Maine business who have been fortunate during difficult times to do the same.”

About Bhagavan Das

Teacher, performer, counter-cultural icon, lover of God: Bhagavan Das is as rich and manifold as Existence itself.

Bhagavan Das is one of the last living cultural icon of the 60′s. As Ram Das’s mentor (author of Be Here Now) he ushered in the New Age Spiritual Movement being the first Kirtan Artist in America. His groundbreaking album “Ah” (1971) produced by Jimmi Hendrix’s manager Michael Jeffrey’s was the first World Music album from Electric Ladyland. Bhagavan Das has also toured with Allen Ginsberg, opened for the Grateful Dead and sang with Bob Dylan.

Living as a sadhu in India for six years Bhagavan Das studied the ancient science of Nada Yoga under the guidance and direction of his Guru Neem Karoli Baba. Nada Yoga is the path of devotion to the inner sound current as a means to God Realization. Alan Watt’s himself saying in a Rolling Stone review of the Album “Ah” that “Bhagavan Das is truly a Master of Nada Yoga”.

Bhagavan Das’s rare and sacred offering to this world is like a singing open heart heralding the Guru’s Grace through the vehicle of Sound.

Pleasant St., Dover-Foxcroft, Maine USA – Celebrating Their 20th Birthday on Saturday, June 11th at 7 p.m.!! It’s a birthday party, It’s rare for groups to be together for that long. This is also the first time they have played at hutchins hall we only have 125 seats soooo in order to come to the party people will need to get their ticket early.

Evergreen has been entertaining New England audiences since 1991. Their eclectic style blends elements of bluegrass, folk, blues, old-time, country and swing into a seamless mix of upbeat, energizing music that appeals to a wide range of listeners. Tight harmonies, solid instrumentation, original interpretations and strong songwriting all combine to create a uniquely engaging show, and everywhere they play – from big-time festivals to backyard barbecues – folks tell us how much they enjoy what we do.

They pride ourselves on creating a relaxed, fun atmosphere onstage. It’s easy to see that they enjoy playing music together! Our shows are choreographed around a single mic, and they all take turns fronting the band – giving the audience

a chance to get acquainted with each of us. Ever-changing instrumental and vocal blends and good-natured banter onstage keep our performances entertaining and fast paced, and a constantly evolving repertoire keeps the material new and fresh, year after year.

About The Hutchins Hall: In 2003 an anonymous benefactor donated what was to become the Hutchins Hall Art Center. Her only stipulation being that it would be made available to the community as a forum for the arts. Since that time with

help from our friends in the area, we have been able to provide at a minimal fee, a place where all are welcome and a stage from which all are able to share their talents.

Hutchins Hall is located at 21 Pleasant St. (the old UU Church). Tickets for live performances are $10. You can purchase tickets at Bob’s Home, Garden and Health Food Store on Lincoln St. in Dover-Foxcroft. You can also buy tickets through PAYPAL at www.thehutchinshall.org. A portion of the proceeds from each live performance will be donated to a local charity.

Don’t forget check out our online schedule at thehutchinshall.org.
