Augusta, Maine – Cool As A Moose was honored as the 2011 Maine Merchant of the Year at the 78th annual meeting of the Maine Merchants Association in Augusta October 20.

“We’re thrilled to be named Maine retailer of the year and we want to extend a big thank you to our customers and the communities who support us,” said Jada Clement, Cool As A Moose sales manager.

According to the board of directors of the Maine Merchants Association, Cool As A Moose was chosen because of its commitment to Maine as a locally-owned business; its statewide presence with locations in Bar Harbor, Brunswick, Freeport, and Portland, ME; its investment in downtowns with its relocation to Brunswick, ME; its use of social media to expand marketability beyond the Maine border; and for working to help other small businesses in need.

The company will celebrate with special events throughout the remainder of the year, announced via coolasamoose.com and Facebook.

The company, owned by Maine resident Kip Stone, operates four brick and mortar retail locations in Maine, a web store at coolasamoose.com, and has licensed two locations in Canada. Stone’s other business Artforms, a screen printing business founded in 1988 in Portland, ME, supplies Cool As A Moose with many of its popular t-shirt designs.

Looking to consolidate the headquarters of his two businesses, Stone purchased the building of the former Grand City department store at 128 Maine Street in Brunswick, ME in 2010, and has relied on the talents of area businesses to design and execute the extensive renovations. The storefront features the flagship Cool As A Moose store, which opened in May 2011. The offices and screen printing operations will relocate from the current location in Westbrook upon the building’s completion.

“We wouldn’t be here without the loyal customers of both Cool As A Moose and Artforms, our employees, and to the communities of Maine who have welcomed us with open arms. This award is for them,” said Stone recently.

About Bhagavan Das

Teacher, performer, counter-cultural icon, lover of God: Bhagavan Das is as rich and manifold as Existence itself.

Bhagavan Das is one of the last living cultural icon of the 60′s. As Ram Das’s mentor (author of Be Here Now) he ushered in the New Age Spiritual Movement being the first Kirtan Artist in America. His groundbreaking album “Ah” (1971) produced by Jimmi Hendrix’s manager Michael Jeffrey’s was the first World Music album from Electric Ladyland. Bhagavan Das has also toured with Allen Ginsberg, opened for the Grateful Dead and sang with Bob Dylan.

Living as a sadhu in India for six years Bhagavan Das studied the ancient science of Nada Yoga under the guidance and direction of his Guru Neem Karoli Baba. Nada Yoga is the path of devotion to the inner sound current as a means to God Realization. Alan Watt’s himself saying in a Rolling Stone review of the Album “Ah” that “Bhagavan Das is truly a Master of Nada Yoga”.

Bhagavan Das’s rare and sacred offering to this world is like a singing open heart heralding the Guru’s Grace through the vehicle of Sound.

Scarborough, Maine (October 14, 2011) — In this challenging economy, small businesses have to be very creative in order to be successful. And that goes double for new businesses. Nicole Avery, Owner and Manager of Zone 3 Fitness, a brand new fitness and personal training center on Route One in Scarborough, knows that. As she began to make the final arrangements for their Grand Opening in early October, she reached out to several owners of successful fitness and health businesses in the area to ask for their advice and their support.

Some people would ask why a business might help a competitor, but Nicole believes that by being open to learning from other business owners and working together, many times there is a way for both businesses to benefit and prosper. And she found that many of her colleagues in the health and fitness industry felt the same way.

“In the beginning, I only reached out to training centers in other markets to ask about their business models and learnings. But as we started to reach out to local personal trainers and fitness instructors to put together the Zone 3 Fitness team, we quickly discovered that many of them were excited about our venture and wanted to help us be successful. That has led to some great connections and some fun collaborations that will benefit all involved.

Katie Foley, who has her own personal training business, is one of those business owners who immediately offered advice and support. Avery stated “Katie made some important connections for me in the local community and, most importantly, is sharing her tremendous teaching skills with us by leading 3 of our Spinning classes. Because she has such a loyal following, she has already brought several new people into the club in just the first few weeks. She believes that having more businesss that help people live healthier lives is good for the community. ”

Scarborough Physical Therapy is another local business that is welcoming Zone 3 Fitness to the Scarborough area. Owner June Tait immediately recognized the benefits of having a high quality fitness center next door. As her patients complete their formal physical therapy with her office, she can encourage them to maintain a regular functional training program at a place that she knows will give them the proper support and guidance. The opportunity to help them transition into a gym setting, which might be intimidating for many people, increases the likelihood that they will continue these healthy habits and be healthier. Both June Tait and Nicole Avery see this opportunity to work together as beneficial to both their businesses.

About Zone3Fitness

Zone 3 Fitness opened in October 2011 to help busy people stay on track to achieve their personal fitness goals. Based on the philosophy of the three components of a healthy fit body being strength, balance and endurance, the Scarborough facility applies the science of body mechanics to maximize your workout. There is cutting edge equipment, group classes and personal training tailored to a client’s physical ability and desired achievement to motivate active people to achieve their fitness goals. Massage is offered by expert licensed therapists in a private suite to complement strenuous workouts. The clean professional training center provides amenities rarely found in the industry.

Ranking high in all essential attributes for a perfect fall outing, Camden and the greater midcoast area is an annual favorite with visitors from around the country.

CAMDEN, Maine (October 3, 2011)—Camden, Maine has been named the 3rd best foliage town in New England, up from 6th in 2010, according to a poll conducted on YankeeFoliage.com, Yankee Magazine’s fall foliage Web site. A seaside town located in the “jewel” of Maine’s midcoast has everything a visitor is looking for, color intensity against the backdrop of the rocky coast, scenic drives, hikes and a whole host of outdoor recreation—adding to that world class dining, lodging, shopping and cultural venues that make Camden and the communities of the Camden Hills definite not-to-miss fall favorites. The voting took place from mid-August and ended on September 28.

Camden Harbor, photo credit: Carol Latta

“This area brings together the best Maine has to offer, with an explosion of color and activities to delight all visitors, we are proud to continue to be a fall favorite,” said Dan Bookham, Executive Director of the Penobscot Bay Chamber of Commerce serving the midcoast area including Camden, Rockport and Rockland. “Families and visitors come from all over to enjoy the unhurried life that is quintessential Maine—hiking, schooner sails, taking in a museum or wine-, cheese- or chocolate- making—rest assured there is plenty to occupy one’s time.”

To qualify for consideration, tourism professionals, along with some of Yankee Magazine’s writers and editors, came together to determine the Top 25 Foliage Towns in New England. Towns were then scored on a scale from 0 to 5 in 14 areas that make up the perfect fall foliage travel destination: color intensity, scenery, vistas, nearby water, scenic drives, hikes, culture, farmers’ markets and farm stands, orchards, covered bridges, state or local parks, the quality and variety of shops to browse, tourism amenities such as hotels and restaurants.

Residential Mortgage Acceptance Corporation (ResMac) has expanded into the Northeast. ResMac is a privately held national mortgage asset aggregator and mortgage lender. ResMac purchases Government and Agency backed mortgage assets which may be securitized by Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac or Ginnie Mae. As a result, ResMac is a Direct Lender and Direct Endorsed Mortgagee for FHA, VA and USDA, offering just about every product available in the mainstream residential mortgage market. ResMac corporate headquarters is located in Boca Raton, FL. They also have operational centers in Newport Beach, CA and Addison, TX.

The Senior Management of ResMac, Inc is committed to delivering the highest quality of mortgage assets to our group of our group of investment partners and investors. As a management team with decades of experience securitizing billions of dollars of mortgage assets and developing and managing correspondent, wholesale and regional origination channels, ResMac has the skills to outperform many of its competitors.

“It is very exciting to have such a dynamic lender move into Maine”, says Dale Doughty a local Mortgage Professional who recently joined ResMac. “The mortgage lending market in Maine had become quite stale and difficult for many people to navigate due to numerous, difficult to understand guidelines and overlays

With a shared purpose of introducing Mainers to our natural resources, Adventure Bound Rafting (www.adventureboundrafting.com) and the Androscoggin Land Trust (www.androscogginlandtrust.org) have announced a partnership.

Adventure Bound Rafting, Maine’s premier outdoor adventure, camping, and whitewater rafting company, and the Androscoggin Land Trust (ALT), a regional land trust in the Androscoggin River watershed, will be offering the opportunity to view this year’s Great Falls Balloon Festival (Aug 19-21) from the Androscoggin River on rafts traditionally meant for whitewater rafting.

“Everything we do is geared to engaging youth and families and helping them explore the outdoors”, said John Philbrick of Adventure Bound Rafting. Based in Caratunk (Maine), Adventure Bound offers whitewater rafting trips, camping, canoe trips, rock climbing and family fun in an alcohol-free environment. “Normally we’re taking trips on the Kennebec and Dead River. This is the second year of working with the Androscoggin Land Trust and we couldn’t be more pleased to help show off the Androscoggin River.”

Jonathan LaBonte of ALT says excitement around using the Androscoggin River for recreation is growing. “The next generation in Lewiston-Auburn deserve a chance to experience that excitement. For an outfitter like Adventure Bound to recognize our work and to offer to help connect youth to the river is amazing.”

Both LaBonte and Philbrick acknowledge most eyes will be on the sky but they hope to also use this opportunity to talk about the river. “There are a lot of positive things happening with the Androscoggin, from new recreational development and new parks to the revitalization of riverfronts like Lewiston-Aububrn’s. While we know our visitors enjoy the balloons, hopefully they will remember the vantage point of LA from which they saw them,” says LaBonte.

Weather permitting, balloon launch viewing trips on the Androscoggin River will launch from the Little Andy Park boat access on Second Street in Auburn. Launch times and further details will be available at www.facebook.com/advbound, and www.androscogginlandtrust.org
