Thousands of people are expected to experience the schooners, music and maritime artisans participating in Camden Windjammer Festival 2010.

CAMDEN, Maine (July 26, 2010) – More than a dozen schooners will sail into one of the country’s most-scenic harbors this Labor Day Weekend as the centerpiece of Camden Windjammer Festival 2010 – a celebration of the area’s maritime heritage and Maine’s sea-faring culture.

Some of Maine’s best-known musicians will perform at concerts that people can attend for free, and artisans will ply their trades at a Maritime Heritage Fair. These tradespeople include boat builders, blacksmiths, coopers, sail makers, blacksmiths and fishermen. Performers will stage a “pirate attack” on the town.

“When the schooners enter this harbor that’s framed by mountains, it’s amazing to see,” said Meg Maiden, Maine Windjammer Association marketing director. “The windjammers are powered primarily by sail and have no engines; most are designated National Historic Landmarks.”

What: Camden Windjammer Festival 2010

When: Sept. 3-5, 2010

Highlights: Schooners arrival; music (including Gordon Bok and Paranoid Social Club); Maritime Heritage Fair; Pirates of the Dark Rose attack; fireworks display; lobster crate and R/C boat races; schooner-crew talent show; all-comers boat parade.

Full Schedule: Available online at www.camdenwindjammerfestival.com/events

Each year, thousands of people from different parts of the country and some international locations attend this end-of-summer event. Camden has been celebrating its maritime heritage each Labor Day Weekend since the mid-1990s.

“It’s an authentic experience,” Maiden said. “The skills that the captains display have been passed down through the generations. All of them have worked their way up on sailing vessels.”

The schooners will host open houses, where visitors will be able to tour the schooners at no cost and learn about the tradition these windjammers represent. In the mid-1800s, ship builders regularly launched schooners into Camden Harbor, and for decades, Camden served as home port for cargo-carrying vessels that traveled to locales such as those in the West Indies.

Camden also is the birthplace of recreational schooner trips, with vessels beginning to carry passengers in the 1930s. Today, Camden remains home port to a dozen schooners, and these majestic sailing ships continue to offer trips where passengers can contribute to the sailing of the big ships, experience life on a windjammer, enjoy the stunning scenery and participate in activities such as lobster bakes.

On shore, the Heritage Fair also will offer free educational and fun activities to visitors.

“The whole impulse around this is activity and not just static displays,” said Bridget Qualey, chair of the Maritime Heritage Fair committee. “It takes people back into their memories and family recollections. It allows visitors to ask questions and learn new things.”

Contemporary Maine culture also will be on display, with free activities such as the performance of Maine’s premier rock band, Paranoid Social Club, on Saturday evening, and a closing performance Sunday by legendary Maine folk artist Gordon Bok.

“We call him the voice of the sea,” said John Orlando, the festival’s entertainment chair. “He’s a Maine native and loves sailing.”

Most events are free for those who attend. More information about the festival and the Camden’s maritime heritage is available online at www.camdenwindjammerfestival.com.

Founded in 1939, the Camden-Rockport-Lincolnville Chamber currently serves businesses and organizations from 54 towns and seven states who actively seek to support business and community in the Camden Hills region of Maine.

The Friends of Central Hall are planning a nostalgic tribute to the 50’s with an old fashioned ice cream social at Central Hall, Dover-Foxcroft on Friday, August 6, 2010 from 11:30a.m. – 3p.m. Cherry cokes, root beer floats, Butterfield’s ice cream sundaes, 50’s music and memorabilia will be the order of the day as everyone is invited to take a trip down memory lane and join the fun.

While you are enjoying ‘hanging out’ in a reproduction of your favorite drug store, you will also be treated to historic memorabilia displays of Kiwanis Minstrel Shows, Foxcroft Academy Basketball Events, School Plays, a slideshow presentation highlighting Central Hall’s past and future, along with guided tours of this grand old building. You will have an opportunity to go on stage, see the old curtain which has been resurrected, view “the Wall” which just might contain your signature and maybe even toss a ball into the old hoop.

Come share your memories of Central Hall with your friends, neighbors, family, and alumni and join the efforts of community members to remember why we are all working hard to preserve this historic Dover-Foxcroft landmark.

Admission is free, and donations will be accepted. Check us out on Facebook -

Ken plays guitar and sings lead and harmony vocals. Jane plays bass and sings lead and harmony vocals.

Hutchins Hall, Pleasant St., Dover-Foxcroft, ME - 07/25/10 – On Friday, August 6th, Ken and Jane Brooks will perform at the Hutchins Hall.
Ken plays guitar and sings lead and harmony vocals. He began performing regularly in 1965 at the Jonesport Opry House in Down East Maine. While serving in the U.S. Air Force he performed in California and other western states. After the military Ken continued to play at clubs, fairs, concert halls and festivals throughout Canada and the U.S., including playing in Nashville. From 1988 to 1995 Ken was the lead vocalist and guitarist for Bluegrass Supply Company, one of the most popular and best known Bluegrass bands in the Northern United States. Since that time Ken has performed with other very popular Maine bands including, Union River Band, Bob & Grace French and the Rainbow Valley Folks and Fox Hollow.

Ken has recorded seven albums and has appeared as a backup musician on many more. A CD that Ken recorded, as lead vocalist with Union River Band, received a “Highlight Review” in the April 2002 edition of Bluegrass Unlimited magazine published in Broad Run, Virginia. No other New England band had ever received a “Highlight Review” in that magazine’s forty year history. Ken’s recordings have received radio air-play throughout the U.S., Canada and many foreign countries. He is considered an “archivist” by professional recording and touring musician Patricia Buie for his accurate and extensive renditions of classic acoustic roots music.

Jane plays bass and sings lead and harmony vocals. She was first introduced to bluegrass and acoustic music when she and Ken were married. On occasion she would perform a few songs and recitations with Ken and his band, which included Bluegrass Supply Company, and Union River Band. During a time when Ken was not playing in a band Jane learned to play the bass and continued singing to accompany Ken’s varied styles of music. Jane also performed as a member of Fox Hollow. She and Ken have been performing as a duet act since 2004.

Hutchins Hall is located at 21 Pleasant St. (the old UU Church). Tickets for live performances are $10 and Open Mic nights are by donation. You can
purchase tickets at Rumbling Falls, 21 East Main Street, Dover-Foxcroft, or at Bob’s Home, Garden and Health Food Store on Lincoln St. in Dover-
Foxcroft. You can also buy tickets through PAYPAL at www.hutchinshall.org. A portion of the proceeds from each live performance will be donated to
a local charity.

WESTBROOK, ME, July 15, 2010 — The Peekaboo Children’s Center, a play space for children up to 5 years old at the Dana Warp Mill, is reaching new heights this summer. On August 15th, Peekaboo is collaborating with the Portland Chamber Music Festival (PCMF) to present a free event at USM’s Abromson Center in Portland that will bring activities and music to families in the Greater Portland area.

The event will begin with an activity hour at 11 am hosted by the Peekaboo Children’s Center, which will be followed by the PCMF’s annual Children’s Concert at 12 noon. The concert features narrator Suzanne Nance of MPBN Radio and PCMF’s Resident Performers. Highlights will include a performance by Karim Al-Zand’s “Red Pajamas”, a work based on “She’ll be Comin’ Round the Mountain.”

Marina Waisman, the Peekaboo Center’s director, expressed her excitement about her participation in the Festival, “We’re delighted to be a part of this wonderful event and to provide another occasion for families to enjoy their time together. The concert presents an invaluable opportunity for children to appreciate and experience music in a setting that’s specifically designed for them. What’s more is that the event is free, making it accessible to everyone.”

The Family Fun Day takes place on August 15th at the Abromson Center at 88 Bedford Street on USM’s Portland Campus. No reservations or tickets are required, and free parking is available in the attached garage. PCMF’s sponsors include Wright Express, MPBN, and Portland Press Herald.
