Portland, Maine, May 6, 2011 – Maine’s First Lady and Adjutant General have partnered with the American Red Cross to sponsor two Armed Forces Walks which are scheduled for June 5, 2011.

The Red Cross movement began on the battlefield in 1881. Today, the work continues, as volunteers and paid staff of the Red Cross forms a vast and unique network of services that provides assistance 24 hours a day to aid both our troops abroad as well as their loved ones here in Maine. The Red Cross efficiently provides time-sensitive communications and serves as the link between the medical community at home and military members at home and abroad. The Red Cross also uses this network to coordinate with military aid societies and provide a local contact for financial assistance to active duty members, retirees, and their families. Services at military installations and military hospitals provide continued emotional support to wounded personnel, veterans, and their families.

Red Cross services extend beyond active duty personnel with the Get to Know Us Before You Need Us and Coping With Deployment Programs, delivered in communities across the state and designed to help families transition when a loved one is about to be deployed and when they return from service.

The Red Cross in Maine promises to be there whenever or wherever help is needed; and the need is immense. In fact, the Red Cross assists about 3 military families every day in Maine.

Event Details:
June 5, 2011
5K Walk around Baxter Boulevard
Payson Park, Portland

5K Walk/Run
USM Lewiston/Auburn Campus, Lewiston

Maine’s Adjutant General Major General John W. Libby and Maine’s First Lady Ann LePage are proud to offer their strong support for the Red Cross and our work. Proceeds from the event will benefit the Services to Armed Forces program in Maine and they ensure that the Red Cross will be able to continue our mission work to with those brave Mainers who serve as well as the families that support them.

For information on how to become a sponsor of these great events or to register to participate, please visit www.maineredcross.org.

All services to military families is provided free of charge by the Red Cross. The Red Cross receives no financial support from the federal or state government. We count on support from the community to serve our state.

Biovation has brought Gunn onto the team to conduct all tests, protocols, and activities at the company’s laboratory. The technology includes a super-absorbent plus desiccant PLA liner integrated with a bag into which Marines can place wet boots for overnight drying. The eight-month contract calls for Biovation to develop a prototype for field-testing by Marines. Biovation will develop the prototype at its Boothbay, ME facility, and anticipates hiring one to two new employees to fulfill the contract.

“Our troops are patrolling through wet environments, and rarely have access to electrical power. They need an easy and portable way to dry their boots overnight,” says Kerem Durdag, CEO, Biovation. “Biovation is proud to have been chosen by the US Marine Corps to develop a boot-drying technology based on the sustainable green PLA material and our non-woven fabric manufacturing and formulation expertise.”

The bag will feature a non-woven fabric layer that will act as a powerful moisture scavenger. Marines will carry the portable bag in their backpacks, and place their wet combat boots inside the bag for overnight drying. It will be developed using polylactic acid material utilizing Biovation’s proprietary meltblown polymer manufacturing process, resulting in a product that is compostable, and therefore easily disposed. Upon successful completion of the technology development phase, Biovation will apply to become a vendor to supply production quantities.

For Immediate Release January 7, 2011

Contact: Dr. Lou Jacobs – 207-807-1119 or drj@drloujacobs.com

Portland Doctor has message for Governor LePage about addiction problem

Portland, Maine — Governor Paul LePage has a serious drug problem. His state has recently been ranked #1 in the country for treatment rates for addiction to the pain killers oxycodone and hydrocodone. Dr. Lou Jacobs of Portland, Maine believes he has a partial solution to the problem for Governor LePage. Focus more on drug free healthcare for key health problems that may often be effectively treated without prescriptions.

Americans spend at least $50 billion each year on low back pain, the most common cause of job-related disability and a leading contributor to missed work. Back pain is the second most common neurological ailment in the United States — only headache is more common. For over 110 years chiropractic care has successfully treated low back pain and headache for a fraction of the cost of traditional medical modalities and without the risk of drug addiction.

Chiropractic is the third largest healthcare profession in The United States. The foundation of chiropractic care since 1895 has always been drugless and non-surgical intervention that regulates the nervous system and musculoskeletal system. Maine has a wealth of Doctors of Chiropractic who can provide a first line of treatment for people in pain without using risky and highly addictive medications like Oxycontin.

Chiropractors will also save the state money. In the short term, fewer and less expensive medical claims paid by the state. In the long term, less need for detox clinics, crime investigation and state funded social services aimed at addiction treatment. Additionally it will position Maine as a progressive, health conscious state that could use a little help in this area. Maine statistics show that over 60% of residents are overweight or obese, and of now there’s the Oxycontin issue to boot. Governor LePage has the opportunity to clean up addiction and crime as well as reduce the healthcare burden on taxpayers, thereby freeing up money for important issues. He simply needs to begin discussion and ask for help from Maine’s chiropractic community.

The 23rd Annual Camden Conference includes panelists who have worked at senior levels in the U.S. State Department, CIA and academia, as well as individuals focused on creating positive change in this troubled region. The conference comes at a time when the United States is increasing its troop presence in Afghanistan, and concern remains high about relations between the nuclear-armed nations of Pakistan and India.

The conference, Afghanistan, Pakistan, India – Crossroads of Conflict, will take place Feb. 19-21. Speakers will travel from Pakistan, Afghanistan, Mexico, Washington, D.C., and other locales to participate in the conference. More information is available at www.camdenconference.org.

“The subject could not be more timely than it is right now,” said John Snow, president of the Camden Conference Board of Directors. “This conference will help us to learn about the culture and history of this important and little-understood part of the world.”

The keynote address will be made by Ahmed Rashid, a Pakistani journalist, scholar, and best-selling author of books about Central Asia. Rashid’s work on the Taliban was used extensively by U.S. State Department after the 9/11 terrorist attacks. Other presenters include:

R. Nicholas Burns, a former Under Secretary of State, described by the Washington Post as “one of the most high-profile diplomats at the State Department” and currently Professor of the Practice of Diplomacy and International Politics at Harvard University’s Kennedy School.

Paul R. Pillar, who worked as the chief of analytics units within the CIA, prior to becoming Director of Graduate Studies at the Center for Peace and Security Studies at Georgetown.

Athanasios Moulakis, Chief Academic Officer at the American University of Afghanistan.

Teresita Schaffer, director of the South Asia Program at the Center for Strategic and International Studies.

The Camden Conference was founded in 1987, in part, as an outgrowth of the large group of retired Foreign Service and CIA officials who live in and around Camden. The nonprofit, non-partisan educational organization works to foster informed discourse on world affairs, and has a history of bringing leading statesmen and thinkers to the Camden Opera House.

“We make sure there is ample time for questions, and because our audience is so informed and engaged, there’s always a great exchange of ideas,” Snow said. “Many of our presenters say that the interaction here is as good as any they have anywhere, even though many of these speakers participate in events around the world.”

A substantial portion of the audience travels to Camden each year for the conference from other parts of the United States and, at times, international locations.

Camden itself has a long and continuing intellectual heritage that includes literary figures such as Edna St. Vincent Millay and continues today with events such as the national Pop!Tech technology conference and annual events focused on literature, creativity and the arts. Artists have historically flocked to the Midcoast because of its unique quality of light and dramatic, rocky coastline.

The Town of Camden remains a vibrant, authentic New England village of unique beauty, where the mountains meet the sea. Down East magazine labeled Camden Harbor the prettiest in Maine, and Boston magazine named Camden One of New England’s Best Small Towns.

“We’re quite proud of our artistic and intellectual heritage here in the Camden area, and always enjoy it when people from other communities visit to share in that tradition,” said Daniel Bookham, Executive Director of the Camden-Rockport-Lincolnville Chamber of Commerce.

The Camden-Rockport-Lincolnville Chamber of Commerce is a non-profit membership association that serves businesses and organizations from 54 towns and seven states who actively seek to support business and community in the Camden Hills region of Maine.

Founded in 1987, the Camden Conference is a nonprofit, non-partisan educational organization whose mission is to foster informed discourse on world affairs.

Augusta, ME — February 25, 2009 — Kennebec Tool & Die, Inc. is not taking the current economic crisis lying down. The high-precision machine-parts manufacturer has launched an aggressive growth strategy that includes changing its name to Kennebec Technologies, Inc., and a complete re-branding initiative.
“This change is the culmination of a two-year-long process of capital investment and internal systems integration,” said company owner and president Charles “Wick” Johnson. During that time, the company has invested more than $2.5 million in state-of-the-art manufacturing machines and integrated business systems.
“These changes and our rebranding provide a solid foundation from which to aggressively broaden our market presence,” said Johnson. “The new name better describes the scope of our expertise, which has evolved significantly over the years. Getting out there to showcase ourselves demonstrates that we’re leaning into this economy, not just hunkering down and waiting it out. We’re moving forward with purpose and vigor, which makes us the kind of partner leading manufacturing companies want to work with.”
Johnson, who bought the company in 1984, built Kennebec Tool & Die from a small shop with manual machines and systems to what it is now: a world-class, award-winning manufacturing company specializing in complex, high-precision components for aerospace, defense, alternative energy, medical, semiconductor, and telecommunications applications.
“Work is still out there to be had, in spite of the severe manufacturing decline, and we are pushing to grow our share of it”, said Johnson. “Maine is home to some of the most highly skilled and motivated workers in the country, and we tell that story everywhere we go.”
Investments Kennebec Technologies made in recent years to upgrade its highly sophisticated engineering, production, and quality-control technology enable the company to produce complex parts to very tight tolerances quickly and efficiently. With bar-fed milling and turning (done-in-one) machining centers, they can produce complex parts completely in one operation, with a solid piece of material going in, and a finished part coming out.
“I am very enthusiastic about what new technology allows us to do,” said Johnson. “But I credit the company’s success to our employees. Their talent, skill, motivation, and dedication are critical to delivering high-quality product and service to our customers. Machines alone can’t do that.”
ABOUT Kennebec Technologies — Established in 1972, Kennebec Technologies is a full-service high-precision machine products manufacturer specializing in complex, high-value-added parts and assemblies for the aerospace, defense, alternative energy, medical, semiconductor, and telecommunications industries.
For additional information about Kennebec Technologies, contact Wick Johnson, or visit www.kennebec.com.
