About Bhagavan Das

Teacher, performer, counter-cultural icon, lover of God: Bhagavan Das is as rich and manifold as Existence itself.

Bhagavan Das is one of the last living cultural icon of the 60′s. As Ram Das’s mentor (author of Be Here Now) he ushered in the New Age Spiritual Movement being the first Kirtan Artist in America. His groundbreaking album “Ah” (1971) produced by Jimmi Hendrix’s manager Michael Jeffrey’s was the first World Music album from Electric Ladyland. Bhagavan Das has also toured with Allen Ginsberg, opened for the Grateful Dead and sang with Bob Dylan.

Living as a sadhu in India for six years Bhagavan Das studied the ancient science of Nada Yoga under the guidance and direction of his Guru Neem Karoli Baba. Nada Yoga is the path of devotion to the inner sound current as a means to God Realization. Alan Watt’s himself saying in a Rolling Stone review of the Album “Ah” that “Bhagavan Das is truly a Master of Nada Yoga”.

Bhagavan Das’s rare and sacred offering to this world is like a singing open heart heralding the Guru’s Grace through the vehicle of Sound.

For immediate release:
August 15, 2011

“2011 football season head injuries in children may last a lifetime: Parents sign at your child’s risk.”

Portland, ME — Evidence suggests that every time you child butts heads with another player, they may be increasing their chances of various types of brain damage later in life. Dr. Lou Jacobs, a chiropractor in Portland is very concerned about the lack of concern among parents for the health of their football playing children. “Unfortunately, parents don’t realize that young kids who play football throughout their school years may experience damage to their brains.” Memory loss, depression, rage, impulsive behavior are all common side effects of CTE or Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy, a condition that is often found in NFL players. Repeated concussions and near concussive hits to the head that don’t heal properly may lead to CTE.

Dr. Lou says “Choose a different sport or activity”. As much as parents and children hate to hear it, allowing your children to play football and receive repeated head injuries is a decision that should be well thought out and the wrong decision could lead to permanent mental impairment. While there are many injuries sustained in football, CTE has more recently been recognized by football fans thanks to a law suit involving 75 former NFL players suing the NFL. These players claim that the NFL had a duty to protect them from head injuries that they knew were harmful and even life threatening.

Dr. Jacobs suggests that parents and children think carefully about the long term implications of short term seasonal athletic satisfaction. He also suggests parents talk to coaches about how their children are practicing as well as learning how to tackle and take a hit. “The head down & go technique is dangerous” says Dr. Jacobs. If a child “must” play football, then regular medical and chiropractic check ups should be routine to minimize risk of short and long term damage.

Portland – Maine Senior Guide, a free on-line resource for Maine seniors and their families, has launched its website at www.MaineSeniorGuide.com

The website is a searchable database of senior-focused products, services and resources from all over the state. Business, non-profit, agency and government information is included in the database, which has more than 7,000 listings and is growing daily. Designed as a resource for adult children as well as active and frail seniors, the site includes six categories and 40+ subcategories of resources ranging from independent living to senior real estate experts. At the same time, it serves as an additional forum for small business to connect with clients. With excellent data and lots of information, MSG will be a formidable resource for Maine’s seniors and their families, and a targeted marketing venue for Maine’s businesses.

Maine Senior Guide is free to viewers. Principals Lynn Peel and Deborah McLean founded the company to establish a collaborative resource that would include free listings as well as more detailed information about paying resources. “It’s a comprehensive site,” notes McLean, “but it’s not complete. We’re accepting listings from groups, non-profits, businesses and associations. Even if you don’t want an enhanced listing right now, we’d still like to include you in the database so that people know you exist.” Peel added, “We want such a complete database of senior products and services that if someone’s daughter lives in Massachusetts and wants to see what resources are available for her mom in Lincoln, all she has to do in put “Lincoln” into our search function and she’ll get everything from health care to volunteer opportunities.”

Maine Senior Guide offers a free calendar function, numerous articles in a searchable library, a weekly blog, and information posting called “Ask Lynn” plus a weekly column by an expert resource. The Maine Senior Guide Facebook and Twitter postings also feed to the site. Maine Senior Guide is at www.maineseniorguide.com

For more information, contact Deborah McLean (dmclean@MaineSeniorGuide.com) or Lynn Peel (lpeel@MaineSeniorGuide.com)

Bangor, ME—September 19-20–Columbia Street Baptist Church, 63 Columbia Street, will be host medical missionary Kristy Engel.

Kristy Engel tries to live by her saying, “Do what you can, with what you’ve got, in the moment you’re given” through her medical work in La Romana, Dominican Republic and the surrounding sugarcane villages.

Spending time as a mission volunteer in Haiti helped Kristy to realize that God was calling her into medical mission. After completing nursing school, she returned to Haiti and worked in pediatrics at Good Samaritan Hospital in Limbé for eighteen months. Now she works with the Good Samaritan Hospital in La Romana, Dominican Republic, ministering to Haitians who are among the poorest in the country. She travels daily to batey (work camp) villages and barrios providing medical attention where so many have been unwilling or unable to offer these services.

“I find incredible joy and fulfillment in working with children,” says Kristy Engel, who uses her skills in nursing and education in medical ministry in the Dominican Republic.

Malnutrition, parasites and poor economic conditions make it difficult to provide appropriate care to the children she works with, but with the help of many American volunteers, she is able to meet some of their needs. She helps to coordinate the medical and volunteer teams that visit the Good Samaritan Hospital as well as mentor individuals or university students who seek international experiences.

Her two dogs, Kobe and Sasha, are also part of her ministry by being her “patients” as she demonstrates appropriate oral hygiene by brushing their teeth and talking about
caring for our bodies. “When I work with my dog, Kobe, to teach children proper hygiene by brushing his teeth, bathing him and brushing his coat,” she says, “most of the kids know his name better than my own!”

Kristy believes few people enter the field of medical ministry because of perceived hardship and often-volatile work environments. “Unfortunately, this means that many people around the world will suffer and die due to lack of medical treatment,” she says. “I have found that God has given me a greater sense of His purpose through nursing on the mission field.” Kristy completed her Master’s in Nursing and her Pediatric Nurse Practitioner program in 2009.

Kristy has been working in La Romana since 2000 and she speaks both Spanish and Haitian Creole fluently.

Kristy also leads many American work teams that minister to the needs in the Dominican Republic.

Kristy Engel’s Schedule: Sept. 19 – 6:00 pm Potluck Supper with Kristy Speaking at 7:00 pm. Sept. 20 – 9:00 am: Kristy will share with the children and youth. Sept. 20 – 10:15: Kristy will share in the morning worship service. Sept. 20 – 6:00 pm: Kristy will share in the evening worship service

Old Orchard Beach, ME – Maine residents and tourists alike are invited to enter the magical world of Narnia during a spell-bounding theatrical performance of The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe by David Payne Drama of Nashville, Tennessee, at Seaside Pavilion, on Saturday, July 18, at 6:30 p.m.

C.S. Lewis’s children’s classic will come to life through rich costumes, an amazing set, and an outstanding cast of 12. The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe is set in World War 2 when bombs are dropping on London. For their safety, four children are sent to the country house of an eccentric professor. It is a large house with many rooms, one of which contains a large mysterious wardrobe – a portal to a snow-filled world, inhabited by talking animals, mystical creatures, and giants.

Narnia, however, is rule by the evil White Witch. The four children and the great Lion Aslan must defeat the witch. The eventually succeed, and become kings and queens reigning for 15 years before returning to the “real” world. It is a story that has captivated the hearts and minds of children and adults since originally written in 1950.

This two-hour performance geared toward the whole family doesn’t end with the last line. Instead, the cast comes out to meet the audience after the show, in full costume. The audience can ask questions, take photographs, and get autographs. A facilitated dialogue surrounding the symbolism of the play will also follow the performance.

Tickets for The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe are $10/advance, $12/day of show, $8/group (10+). For more information or to purchase tickets, call 207.934.2024 or visit www.seasidepavilion.org. To view a trailer of this outstanding performance and to learn more about David Payne Drama, visit www.davidpaynedrama.com.

The Salvation Army built Seaside Pavilion in 1998 as a place for its camp meetings and as a gift to the community to enrich lives, lift spirits, and build community through the performing arts. Seaside Pavilion offers a state-of-the-art sound system and 1,400 stadium style seats with views of the professional stage and breath-taking natural setting.

BANGOR, Maine (Press Release), March 30, 2009. Beginning April 19, at 12:00 noon, several Bangor area churches will unite to provide a meal every Sunday to anyone who is hungry. Columbia Street Baptist Church, Bangor Baptist, Redeemer Lutheran and St. Patrick’s Episcopal Church will take turns providing food and serving a meal every Sunday. Currently, the meal consists of soup, bread and cookies. The Soup kitchen’s location is a large room with adjacent kitchen on the first floor of Columbia Street Baptist Church, 63 Columbia Street, Bangor, 945-6616.

Columbia Street Baptist Church’s physical location in the heart of Downtown Bangor, and close proximity to the Bangor Homeless Shelter, Shaw House, and Manna Ministries, makes it a great place to host a soup kitchen and serve a meal to those who would otherwise have no meal on Sunday.

The general feeling within the community is that a meal on Sunday is needed. Manna Ministries and The Salvation Army Soup Kitchen—who serve meals during the week—are closed on Sunday. The Bangor Homeless Shelter turns away 20-30 people each Sunday. Once word gets around, the Soup kitchen expects to serve 80 to 90 people each week. During these tough economic times, it’s possible the need for a Sunday soup kitchen will be here for a very long time.

BANGOR, Maine (Press Release), March 31, 2009. Columbia Street Baptist Church has performed the dramatic play “The Last Supper” every two years since 1979. The Ernest K. Emurian’s play is based on the famous painting “The Last Supper” by Leonardo da Vinci — created between the years 1495–1498.

This contemporary dramatization brings the painting to life. Taking place in the upper room, the painting represents the last meal Jesus shared with His disciples before His betrayal. The scene shows the tension filled moment when Jesus reveals that one of the disciples will betray him before the night is over. The play tells the story of the dismay, amazement and confusion this statement caused as each character reflects on their relationship with Jesus and wrestles with the statement “Is it I?”

Without knowing the history behind Leonard da Vinci’s “The Last Supper”, the figures in the painting could easily be eating a normal meal, discussing events of the day or telling of the glorious miracles they had seen. Andrew might tell of the boy who’s loaves of bread and fish fed thousands. Judas Iscariot might once again, express his anger at Mary for wasting precious oil washing the feet of Jesus, or his wishes that Jesus would hurry and become the King of the Jews. However, is it well documented that the intent of da Vinci was to portray the moment of betrayal.

Some of the players have performed this play numerous times. Mark Tuck, who plays “Doubting” Thomas, takes the role very seriously. “Doubt has stopped me from doing God’s will in my life more than once. Playing the role of Thomas has made me really look at my life and the things I have and some of the things I have not done in my life.”

Tyke McKay has played Andrew at least a dozen times, starting in 1987. At the time, the youngest man in the performance, playing the oldest disciple. “Andrew is an interesting contrast to the impetuousness of Peter. He is quiet and contemplative. Traits I do not possess. It seems amazing to me that over the years I need less and less white hair powder. I look forward to doing the play once again as I search for new meaning, no longer a young man, but one closer to Andrew’s age with a little seasoning.”

Chuck Hillman has played Thaddeus at least four times. “It becomes more meaningful each time, as I learn more about Thaddeus, and the other disciples. It is an honor to be a part of the group, and humbling to try to portray the feelings of the disciples at that time . . . realizing that all the information was gleaned from scripture, it becomes very informative, and interesting.”

“The Last Supper” will be presented Thursday April 9, and Friday April 10, at 7:00 pm in the main sanctuary of Columbia Street Baptist Church, 63 Columbia Street, Bangor.
