PORTLAND, ME , August 8, 2011. Of some 200 participants in the SustainAbility: design for a better world® display at the summer 2011 New York International Gift Fair, annie|catherine is one of seven companies that has been designated as achieving the highest level of sustainability for their products, production processes and business practices.

NYIGF’s “Degrees of SustainAbility” initiative outlines industry-specific criteria for identification of green products and producers. A three-tiered ranking indicates the extent to which a product/producer complies with these standards. Ilene Shaw of Shaw+Co! curates the exhibit and designates each participants’ ranking. The SustainAbility3 ranking which annie|catherine received is the highest possible ranking as annie|catherine uses only recycled paper for all of their products, prints their cards in a facility that generates its electricity entirely from wind power, donates a portion of their sales to charity organizations, and only uses local businesses to produce their products.

“When we founded our company, we felt sustainability was the most important principle we should follow. It guides all of our business decisions.” Says Annie Darling. “In addition, we’ve always believed in keeping production local in order to provide people we know and trust with good jobs.” Adds Catherine Breer.

NYIGF’s SustainAbility Recognition Program, which started in 2007, focuses on global gift and home industry suppliers whose products or production processes are eco-friendly, as well as companies whose business practices are socially responsible, philanthropic or fair-trade oriented.

annie|catherine will be exhibiting their “green” products at the NYIGF in Javits Center North, booth 9118, August 13-18, where 35,000 people attend from all 50 states and more than 85 countries.

About annie|catherine

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

Brunswick, Maine – January 24, 2011 – Cabin Fever: The Game from Maine, a dice scoring game published by Merrymeeting Games of Brunswick, Maine, was selected for the distinction and award of “Game of the Con” at the SnowCon Maine 2011 gaming convention in Orono, Maine (held on January 15th & 16th). Hundreds of enthusiasts of all ages gathered for the annual social-gaming convention. SnowCon Maine celebrates the electronic-free gaming culture with special events, guests, workshops, and exhibitors that appeal to tabletop and board game fans young and old.

Cabin Fever was designed by Mark Leaman of Brunswick, Maine. “The challenge was how to make it fun. There are a lot of games that are simply a race to the finish line. I wanted to create something different, something that had a social component, that was strategic, competitive and uniquely Maine.” Leaman said he developed the idea for the game several winters ago during a snowstorm. “I had been working on developing a game that was Maine themed and family oriented,” said Leaman. “Then, during the storm, the power went out. My son and I were sitting around and I said, ‘Try out this idea with me.’ He really loved it so I figured I was onto something.”

The object of the game is simple, be the first person to “dig out” from being “snowed in” and score 1,000 points to win the game. However winning the game is fraught with obstacles such as broken chairlifts, squalls and Nor’Easters. The game accommodates 2 – 8 players and is recommended for ages 13 and up. Each Cabin Fever game comes in a palm-sized, acrylic travel cube and includes five Scoring Dice, one “vacation” die, a plastic cabin game piece, instructions and three “I’ve got Cabin Fever!” stickers and retails for $7.95 (US).

Cabin Fever:The Game from Maine is available in select retail stores in Maine and on the web through the Merrymeeting Games online store at http://merrymeetinggames.com.

The device will be on display at the MEDICA trade show in Dusseldorf, Germany from November 17 – 20.

Camden, Maine, September 4, 2010 – Designing Women, a non-profit volunteer corporation that works directly with organizations that benefit women and girls in local communities, will hold its second mid-coast Maine fine arts and crafts show on Saturday, September 4, from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the First Congregational Church in Camden. This show is the group’s sole event in the mid-coast region. Some of the featured craftspeople will include Joelle Leavitt Webber of Mermaid Bindery, K. Dale Turdo, Wendilee Heath O’Brien and Mary Ann Small of Maine Island Rag Rugs. Items available for purchase will include pottery, paintings, stationary, silver jewelry, glass, porcelain and sculptures.

Designing Women was established in 1991. Its current membership of women designers and artists now exceeds 120, with most of the artists hailing from Maine and New Hampshire. In addition to providing unique, handmade creations to the public, Designing Women collaborates with non-profits to raise funds for programs that directly benefit women and girls. At the September 4 show, 100% of the suggested $2.00 door donation will go to New Hope for Women. Each donor will also be entered into a drawing to win select prizes provided by Maine businesses.

New Hope for Women, which will mark its thirtieth anniversary next year, offers assistance to all persons affected by domestic and dating violence in Lincoln, Knox and Waldo counties. It provides a 24-hour crisis hotline, support groups, legal services, safe homes and transitional housing, school programs, community outreach and workplace training. New Hope also operates Time for Change, a certified batterer intervention program.

Staff and volunteers from New Hope will be serving lunch beginning at 11:00 a.m. Menu items include homemade chili and chicken salad, bagels, desserts, coffee and water. Information about New Hope’s programs and services will also be available.

Here is some additional information about the featured craftspeople mentioned above.

Joelle Leavitt Webber binds one-of-a-kind books and editions for clients, rebinds old books, and has created a line of blank books, gift boxes and albums. Her designs are based on historical models, built with traditional tools and techniques and use only archival materials.

K. Dale Turdo creates original, hand-built sculptures that are realistic in style. Turdo has received many awards and exhibits in Maine and across the country. She finds great pleasure and peace creating these beautiful works of clay and feels that sculpting is good for the soul.

Wendilee Heath O’Brien is versed in conventional painting techniques from eastern and western cultures. She transcends and manipulates these techniques to create a visual dialogue with her viewers, using watercolor, pastels and Asian ink.

Mary Ann Small is the owner of Maine Island Rag Rugs, whose rugs grace homes all over the world and provide warmth and beauty underfoot. Her rugs have been displayed at the Blaine House in Augusta, the Archipelago and the Jonathan Frost Gallery in Rockland, the Art Gallery at the University of New England’s Westbrook campus, the National Folk Festival in Bangor and most recently at the Camden Garden Club’s Showcase House rooms sponsored by Phi Home Designs.
