Parrot Head Club of Maine to host the 2009 Annual New England Parrot Head Convention

The Parrot Head Club of Maine is pleased to host the 2009 Annual New England Parrot Head Convention March 5-8, 2009, at the Marriott Sable Oaks in South Portland. An anticipated 400-500 Parrot Heads from New England and other states are expected to attend this year’s event; titled “Tiki Time on Maine Terrain.”

Our entertainment line-up is shaping up, and although subject to change, we expect to feature local and national talent including The Calypso Cowboys, The Corona Brothers, The Boat Drunks, comedian Tom Clark, Jim Morris and Big Bamboo, and other very special guests to be announced soon!

Attendance is not limited to Parrot Head Club members. Anyone interested may register and join us as we “Party with a Purpose” to raise money for four local charities: Special Olympics Maine, Maine Alzheimer’s Association, Maine Cancer Foundation and Make-A-Wish Maine. Previous conventions have raised thousands of dollars for charity and we expect this one to be no different.

We plan to showcase Maine as a destination and with our raffle prizes, featuring great Maine made products. Interested parties wishing to donate products and sponsorship can contact Donna Kitchen at convention@phcofmaine.com to find out how they can participate. Our goal is to have at least 250 raffle prizes and we can only meet that goal with the generous support of local businesses. We also have vendor opportunities available.

ROWE, BREAU, AND HOUSE ANNUAL HOLIDAY CONCERT AN L/A TRADITION

AUBURN - The Dave Rowe Trio, Denny Breau and Phil House will present their annual holiday concert Saturday, Dec. 20 at 7:00 PM at the First Universalist Church.
The concert, a Lewiston-Auburn holiday tradition, will begin with the performers taking turns on stage and then coming together for selected songs.
The Dave Rowe Trio includes singer/guitarist Dave Rowe, who is the choir director at the church; bassist Kevin O’Reilly; and mandolinist Eric “The Mandolinenator” McDonald. The trio is one of the area’s most popular folk groups. The trio also tours nationally, bringing their brand of original and traditional music to audiences across the country.
Breau, guitar master and songwriter, is a Lewiston-Auburn hometown boy who has made a name for himself as much for his guitar skills as for his ease and gentle on-stage humor. He and Rowe were bandmates in Turkey Hollow with Dave’s dad, the late Tom Rowe of Schooner Fare fame.
House, pianist extraordinaire and organist at the church, will present his holiday offerings on the Chickering grand piano and the church’s historic Hook & Hastings pipe organ.
The concert will culminate with Rowe and House performing their rendition of “O Holy Night” in both English and French.
This holiday tradition was the brain-child of Tom Rowe, who organized the first concert in the early 1990s while he and Dave were performing as Rowe by Rowe.
The new “Christmas in Maine” CD, released to benefit the Maine Credit Union Campaign for Ending Hunger in Maine and to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the “Maine Christmas Song” by Con Fullam, will be available at the concert. The CD recording of the 2005 holiday concert will also be sold.
Tickets are $15, $13 for students and seniors, and may be purchased at the door. Seating is on a first-come, first-served basis. Doors will open at 6:30 p.m. The church is at 169 Pleasant St. For more information, call 866-655-7171 toll free, or log on to www.daverowemusic.com.

Dave Rowe Trio in South Portland March 17

Saturday, February 23rd, 2008

Maine’s Dave Rowe Trio will bring their dazzling three-part harmony, hot guitar picking, and jaw-dropping fiddling to the Thomas Room, 729 Broadway, South Portland, on March 17 at 7:30 p.m. A portion of the proceeds from the St. Patrick’s Day celebration will benefit the Maine Irish Heritage Center in Portland.

The trio has gained a national reputation for their mix of Celtic, folk and maritime music. They were invited to perform at Milwaukee Irish Fest, the world’s largest Irish music festival, in 2006 and 2007. In addition to their daily shows at the fest last summer, they participated in a tribute to Irish bard, Tommy Makem, who died August 1, 2007. The inclusion of the trio was especially appropriate since Rowe’s first professional job as a musician was as bass player for Tommy’s sons,  the Makem Brothers, when he was 15 years old.

The group began in the spring of 2004 when Rowe was looking for a new direction following the death of his dad, Tom Rowe, who was a founding member of trio Schooner Fare as well as Turkey Hollow which included the younger Rowe and Denny Breau. Rowe met fiddle player Ed Howe formerly of Wake the Neighbors, and bass guitarist Kevin O’Reilly and asked them to join him on an album he was producing as a tribute to his dad.

The trio had their first rehearsal on St. Patrick’s Day before a live audience and they have not slowed down since. The trio has released five critically acclaimed albums and tours across the Northeast, Mid-Atlantic States and Midwest.

Scott Alarik, writing for the Boston Globe, said, “In their youthful zest, pulsing melodicism, and pedal-to-the metal energy, Rowe and his pals prove there’s nothing retro about carrying on the family name.”

Individual tickets are $20 and $30 for a couple and are available in advance at Bull Moose locations as well as the Maine Irish Heritage Center, 780-0118, or by calling Dave Rowe at (866) 655-7171. Tickets will also be sold at the door.
