For Immediate Release

MEDIA CONTACT: Danielle Eaton, Media Relations, Lewiston Auburn Film Festival
Email: Danielle@lafilmfestival.org

Lewiston Auburn Film Festival (LAFF) organizers have released the names of the first round of accepted films to the 2012 festival. LAFF accepts films in four categories: documentary, feature length, shorts, and experimental. As of mid-January, almost 350 films have been submitted.

Chairperson of LAFF, Sandra Marquis, said: “Even with the expansion of the festival from a one-day event last year to this year’s three day long festival, we still only have time to show about 45 to 50 hours of film, so the competition is even higher this year.”

In the category of documentaries, LAFF is excited to announce the acceptance of four outstanding films:

Welcome to Lee, Maine (Maine) is the story of a small close-knit community in rural Maine that comes together to deal with the devastating news that it has become the smallest community in America to lose two sons, Joel House and Blair Emery, in the Iraq War.

The Darkness in My Heart (Rwanda) tells of the unspeakable horrors of war and genocide from the perspective of one unbelievably brave and strong young woman.

Finding Donn Fendler: Lost on a Mountain in Maine 72 Years Later (Maine) follows two young filmmakers Ryan Cook and Derek Desmond as they try to track down the infamous Donn Fendler and acquire the rights to share his story in a whole new way.

Four Guys, No Ball: Surviving the World Cup (Argentina & USA) is what happens when four young filmmakers meet in Germany to document World Cup fever.

For feature length films LAFF is happy to welcome:

Schizophrenic Love Story (Texas) a hilarious comedy, where an agoraphobic, schizophrenic consults his three delusions – Mary Mother of Jesus, Einstein, and a vampire – for love advice when his new neighbor, Lily, shows up with secrets of her own.

We are the Hartmans (New York) starring Richard Chamberlain (Dr. Kildare, Shogun & The Thornbirds) is a heart-warming comedy about a small town music club struggling to survive against corporate takeovers.

Three short films LAFF organizers urge you to explore include:

The Carrier (California) with a star-studded cast including Chad Michael Murray (One Tree Hill), Rita Wilson (Sleepless in Seattle, Volunteers) and several familiar faces from True Blood including Anna Paquin (X-Men) and Mariana Klaveno, The Carrier follows a grieving mother’s attempts to warn her son’s partners of his HIV positive diagnosis after his untimely death.

Flippy Day (Maine) directed by native Mainer Michael Panenka and made for the 2009 48 Hour Film Festival in Portland, Flippy Day is a comedy about an obscure holiday sacred only to roller skaters as observed by its unique followers.

Atroz (Spain) shares a hilarious insight into the torturous life of a teddy bear as told from his point of view.

For experimental films, LAFF is proud to present:

Colony Collapse (Maine) an eerily beautiful view of an abandoned looking downtown Lewiston amidst a snowstorm.

Out of Step (Pennsylvania) the innermost thoughts of female war veterans are shared through both spoken word and interpretive dance.

Automata (Australia) is the dark-humored story of Henry, the last in a long line of duck hunters, and explores the obsession between the hunter and his prey.

The Lewiston Auburn Film Festival will take place on April 13, 14 & 15. Friday will open the festival weekend with a special concert with Don McLean at the Franco American Heritage Center in Lewiston. Saturday’s movie goers will experience theater going in a whole new light as venues all across Lewiston Auburn turn their spaces into movie theaters for a day. Saturday night will culminate with a Gala Dinner and Awards Ceremony at the Hilton Garden Inn Auburn Riverwatch. Sunday’s VIP ticket holders will enjoy a brunch at Fishbones before heading over to the Public Theater, where ticket holders will view a selection of the winning films from the previous night’s award show. Ticket prices and information are available at www.lafilmfestival.org.

Portland, Maine (January 26, 2012) — Art All Around®, a project sponsored by the Maine Center for Creativity, has won the William Johnson Award for outstanding achievement in demonstrating aesthetic merit in industrial or commercial coatings work. The team will accept their award at the national convention in Tampa, Florida.

The award comes from the Steel Structures Painting Council, a national professional society concerned with the use of coatings to protect industrial steel structures. The structure awards program was created as an opportunity to give recognition for outstanding high-performance coating work. The awards are given to recognize the work of teams of contractors, designers, end users and coating manufacturers for excellence on particular coatings projects.

The William Johnson Award was given to the team that painted Art All Around’s Tank #28 at the Sprague Energy tank farm in South Portland, the third tank of a total of 16 that will be painted, making Art All Around the largest piece of public art in the world. This project has received recognition and praise for its use of color, gloss, texture, and coating that enhances the industrial environment, while representing a design created by a world-renowned contemporary artist, Jaime Gili.

The coatings team involved in this project are Sprague Energy, Sherwin-Williams, AMEX Industrial Coating, Jon Cavallo P.E., ENERCON and the volunteers of the Maine Center for Creativity. The project is visible by air on the approach to Portland’s International Jetport and is fast becoming a major landmark visible from numerous locations in Portland, South Portland and on the water. More than a quarter million people see it on their daily commute on I-295 and annually more than 500,000 Downeaster Amtrak passengers pass it.

Notable people who also contributed to the success of the project include Jean Maginnis, Founder and Executive Director of the Maine Center for Creativity, Gregory W. Boulos, Chair, Governance Committee, MCC and Co-Project Director, Georgia Flanagan, AMEX Industrial Coatings Supervisor and Graphic Designer, Alan Holt, Project Facilitator, Tom Dobbins, Board of Directors, MCC and Sprague Technical Project Director, Katherine Greenleaf, Board President, MCC, Phil Harriman, Chair of the AAA Capital Campaign Committee, Pamela Plumb, Nominating Chair, Lead Volunteer AAA Committee Member, and Chuck Lawton, Chair of the Development Committee, MCC. This award represents the volunteer work and years of effort put in by the entire Board of Directors and Advisory Council of the Maine Center for Creativity.

Mardi Gras Party
Saturday, February 18th, 2012 @ 6pm
Heritage Hall at the Franco Center
(Oxford Street Entrance)
An Authentic New Orleans Experience with Dinner, Drinks, and Music by The Blues Buzzards
Tickets: $20 in advance at 207.689.2000 or francocenter.org
Franco Center | 46 Cedar Street, Lewiston, ME | 04240

The Franco Center will present another unique, festive and must-experience event with its offering of “Mardi Gras in L/A” in the Franco Center’s Heritage Hall. In the tradition of New Orleans, Mardi Gras audiences will be treated to Cajun cuisine, spirits, and music.

As many know, Mardi Gras means “Fat Tuesday” en Francais. However, this holiday has a much wider historical and international appeal beyond the Francophone diaspora. Traditionally, Mardi Gras is the last decadent or “fat” feast before the fasting that often accompanies the season of Lent. Here at the Franco Center, we take this as a serious endeavor and, for several years, have presented the most notable Mardi Gras celebrations in the Lewiston/Auburn area. This year will be no exception!

Chef Edmond, “Directeur des Andouilles et des Cornichons” at the Franco Center, has an amazing meal planned of traditional New Orleans cuisine, including Crab Gumbo, Jumbalaya, New Orleans Ratatouille, Andouilles with Onions and Peppers, Truffled Bourbon Mashed Sweet Potatoes, and the crowning dish, a King & Queen Cake. There will be ample amounts of classic New Orleans libations, like the legendary Hurricane, to help you forget the impending fast.

Of course, no Mardi Gras party is complete without some foot stomping, street shaking, soul stirring music. To help us get in the proper mood for celebrating, we’ve got local favorites the Blues Buzzards. This group, led by veteran guitar man Earl Bigelow, is dipped in the blues, has heaps of horns, and knows how to fatten up a Tuesday, or Saturday, as the case may be.

About the Blues Buzzards
The Blues Buzzards are an 8-piece blues/rock band with a 3-man horn section, playing a rompin’, stompin’ mix of tunes by Eric Clapton, Ray Charles, T Bone Walker, Van Morrison, Elvis, The Beatles, and countless others. Lead by veteran guitar man Earl Bigelow, The Buzzards have been thrilling Maine audiences for over thirty years. The horn section gives the band a fat, brassy sound along the lines of Blood Sweat and Tears, Tower of Power, and other horn bands. Comprised of seasoned musicians, the Buzzards turn any event they’re playing into a rockin’ good time.

About the Franco Center
We are Le Centre D’Heritage Franco-Americain. The Franco American Heritage Center in Lewiston, ME, USA.

We believe history and heritage are action verbs, just like community and neighbor. We practice these by engaging members of our community young and old to share their experiences and traditions, so we might all benefit from them.

We’re a performing arts organization that celebrates our Franco-American Heritage; a legacy handed to us by generations of our brave ancestors who relocated here from France, from Quebec, and from all across the globe. We also strive to welcome new visitors and residents to our region, engaging members of our community young and old to share their experiences and traditions, so we might all benefit from them.

We present the best in symphonic music, solo instrumentalists, chorales and choirs, and contemporary music. We have a wildly successful theme night series, as well as more informal nightclub performances.

A WISE AND WHIMSICAL COMEDY ABOUT
LOVE, MARRIAGE & MISCOMMUNICATION
The Public Theatre is proud to present the New England Premiere of The Language Archive by Julia Cho, a wise and whimsical comedy about love, marriage and miscommunication playing Jan 27 – Feb 5. “We’re thrilled to be one of the first professional theatres in the country to produce this play since its New York debut”, says Artistic Director Christopher Schario. “We fell in love with this show when we saw it in New York, and we believe our audience will fall in love with it as well. If you’ve ever been married, or in a relationship, or suffered from unrequited love, I guarantee you will see yourself in this play, laugh at yourself in this play, and probably have a fascinating conversation on the way home.”
For anyone who has ever struggled with the language barrier between men and women, this thought-provoking and compassionate new comedy speaks volumes about the most universal, mysterious and insane language of all; the language of love. The play, which won the prestigious Susan Smith Blackburn Prize, tells the story of George, a brilliant linguist who is unable to find the right words to say to his wife. Meanwhile, at work, he’s also in danger of losing his chance to record the dying language of Elloway because its last two speakers – an elderly married couple – are in the midst of a fight, and they refuse to speak their native tongue until they resolve their argument.

This wonderful new comedy explores our need to connect, our struggle to communicate, and our search to find the words for what lies in our hearts. “At heart”, says Schario, “it’s a story about people looking for someone who speaks their language. We’re all looking for someone who hears us, and gets us – not just the words themselves but what’s said between the lines.”

Dawn McAndrews, the recently appointed Artistic Director at The Theater at Monmouth, will direct this production starring Equity actors James Hoban as George, Janet Mitchko as Mary, Tarah Flanagan as Emma, Andrea Gallo as Alta and Edward Furs as Reston. The set design is by Michael Reidy, lighting design by Bart Garvey and costumes by Jonna Klaiber

The Language Archive will be performed at The Public Theatre, Lewiston/Auburn’s Professional Theatre, Jan 27, 28, 29, Feb 2, 3, 4, 5. Performance Times are: Thurs/Fri 7:30pm, Sat at 8pm, Sun 2pm, with an added matinee performance on Saturday, Feb 4 at 2pm. Adults $18, Youth $5, (18 and under), Group Rate (10+) $15. For more information or tickets call The Public Theatre Box Office at 782-3200 or visit www.thepublictheatre.org.

The group began 20 years ago on the seacoast of New Hampshire and currently is the collaboration of 4 vocalists and 4 piece band. Our purpose is to share the joys – and sorrows of gospel music, and to rock the house. The spirit that flows through our songs goes back to the roots of music itself. It is universal and tells stories as old as time. We are performers who love entertaining audiences. Our music is primarily defined as gospel in the southern African-American tradition with a heavy R&B flavor. However, while it is that, it is not all we sing. We also include traditional gospel songs, rock, folk and a cappella. Our music is roots music. It is harmony. It is hard rockin’ and reflective. It is toe tapping, it is hand clapping, It can (and does) move audiences to their feet and into the aisles to dance. It roars. It purrs. It is above all – GOSPEL – and the Divas remind everybody, all the time – “Gospel is not now, and never was a spectator sport”.

Formed in the spring of 1990, The Irish Descendants, have been a mainstay in the Newfoundland and Canadian music industry for over two decades. In that time the band has performed over 4000 shows across North America and beyond! With the founding members all hailing from various outport fishing communities, the original goal for the group was to take the music that they all learned and performed home in their kitchens, to the festival stages, pubs, and concert halls of their beloved Newfoundland. In a very short time, after the release of their first CD Misty Morning Shore (1991), the first CD ever released by a Newfoundland band, it was clear that they were on track to take their music on a worldwide journey! Over the years the line-up of the band has been led under the guidance of front man and founding member, Con O’Brien. One of Newfoundland’s most recognized entertainers, his rich baritone voice, once described as, “ a voice that could wake the dead”, has been performing Irish Newfoundland music for a quarter century. The current line-up, for the winter and spring 2011 touring season, will see regulars, Robert Kelly from Fogo Island Newfoundland (bass & vocals), and veteran St John’s musician Dave Panting (guitar, bouzouki, mandolin & vocals), joined by another icon and veteran traditional player Kelly Russell (fiddle, bouzouki, concertina, whistles, vocals). The brand of music that The Irish Descendants are known and loved for is steeped in a rich tradition. Con O’Brien is the oldest member of the 12th generation of his family living on the Island! The O’Brien’s of Bay Bulls as they are locally known, came from Waterford City Ireland in 1721. These forefathers settled in the little town of, Bay Bulls, (Today’s population 1200) located on the Southern Shore of the Avalon Peninsula, 20 miles to the south of the capital city St John’s, North America’s oldest city. Here in this place they were able to carve out a life for themselves using the almighty cod fishery as a means to survive, all the while, like all of the Newfoundland Irish, passing on the traditions and culture of their Irish home, generation to generation.
