EMAIL: rmk@portlandmaine.gov

August 31st is Overdose Awareness Day. Learn the signs of an overdose and “Save a Life”

The Overdose Prevention Project, a program of the City of Portland’s Health and Human Services Department, Public Health Division, will commemorate International Overdose Awareness Day on Tuesday, August 31 in memory of those who have lost their lives as a result of a drug overdose. “Fatal overdoses have continued to stay high and have surpassed traffic deaths in Maine more than once in recent years,” says Ronni Katz, Substance Abuse Prevention Program Coordinator. “Most overdose victims can be saved by calling 911, but people are afraid of getting into trouble if they call,” Katz added. “Statistics show that few arrests result after making the call and most importantly, lives are
saved. “
The Overdose Prevention Project was started by the Public Health Division in 2003 as a response to the record number of fatal overdoses in Portland. Since then, Portland has seen a consistent decline in fatal overdoses. The OPP raises awareness about the signs of an overdose:
• Not Breathing
• Turing Blue
• Not Responding
• Snoring Deeply

People can write something about someone they lost to an overdose on our Facebook page at: http://www.facebook.com/portlandprevention
In addition, there will be posts about addiction and recovery on our Facebook page and on Twitter (http://twitter.com/portprevent).

More information about the Overdose Prevention Project and Portland Public Health’s other substance abuse prevention programs can be found at: http://substanceabuse.portlandmaine.gov/

People are urged to call 911 if someone exhibits any of the warning signs of an overdose, even if you are not sure. Why let a life-threatening situation become a life-ending situation?

6th Annual Camden International Film Festival

September 30-October 3rd 2010

Camden, Rockport and Rockland Maine

The Camden International Film Festival returns for its sixth season in October 2010. The festival will once again shine the spotlight on works that show dedication to craft and a unique and artistic approach to telling a darn good story. All films are selected because of their ability to arouse discussion on documentary film as an art form, a catalyst for change and as an outlet for the independent voice.

Each year CIFF takes over multiple venues throughout three coastal towns in Maine. Nestled against the mighty Atlantic during fall’s explosion of color, the festival becomes a unique setting to experience the very best in international documentary film. Accompanying the screening of nearly fifty features and shorts are Q&A’s with directors and producers, the Points North Documentary Film Forum, musical concerts, interactive and video art installations, parties, panels and an opportunity to connect with eager audiences and industry leaders in an extremely intimate setting.

The towns that hold screenings in are close in proximity, but all have their own distinct feel. The main venues are Camden’s Opera House , Bayview St. Cinema and Rockland’s Strand Theatre and Farnsworth Art Museum. They also hold events at the Maine Media Workshops campus in downtown Rockport, Maine.

The Camden International Film Festival began in 2005 after the festival’s founder and director realized that despite the rich history of documentary filmmaking found throughout New England, there was not one event dedicated solely to highlighting the work of nonfiction artists, especially the new style of filmmaking that had been emerging in the documentary world.

Since 2005 CIFF has screened hundreds of award-winning films and hosted filmmakers from all over the world. Their commitment to seek out films that that push the boundaries of the form has paid off and they are proud to have screened several New England, East Coast and National Premieres of some major films in the documentary world over the past five years.

Each year the audiences have grown, but the commitment to their mission has remained the same. They love a good story, one that acts as a microcosm for the larger issue at hand and they love to share these stories with audiences. What separates them from the pack is the intimacy of the event and the cutting edge programming. Join em in 2010 for some films, merry making and more fresh ocean air then you can swallow as they continue this exciting journey of showcasing the very best in nonfiction film.

Camden, Maine, September 4, 2010 – Designing Women, a non-profit volunteer corporation that works directly with organizations that benefit women and girls in local communities, will hold its second mid-coast Maine fine arts and crafts show on Saturday, September 4, from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the First Congregational Church in Camden. This show is the group’s sole event in the mid-coast region. Some of the featured craftspeople will include Joelle Leavitt Webber of Mermaid Bindery, K. Dale Turdo, Wendilee Heath O’Brien and Mary Ann Small of Maine Island Rag Rugs. Items available for purchase will include pottery, paintings, stationary, silver jewelry, glass, porcelain and sculptures.

Designing Women was established in 1991. Its current membership of women designers and artists now exceeds 120, with most of the artists hailing from Maine and New Hampshire. In addition to providing unique, handmade creations to the public, Designing Women collaborates with non-profits to raise funds for programs that directly benefit women and girls. At the September 4 show, 100% of the suggested $2.00 door donation will go to New Hope for Women. Each donor will also be entered into a drawing to win select prizes provided by Maine businesses.

New Hope for Women, which will mark its thirtieth anniversary next year, offers assistance to all persons affected by domestic and dating violence in Lincoln, Knox and Waldo counties. It provides a 24-hour crisis hotline, support groups, legal services, safe homes and transitional housing, school programs, community outreach and workplace training. New Hope also operates Time for Change, a certified batterer intervention program.

Staff and volunteers from New Hope will be serving lunch beginning at 11:00 a.m. Menu items include homemade chili and chicken salad, bagels, desserts, coffee and water. Information about New Hope’s programs and services will also be available.

Here is some additional information about the featured craftspeople mentioned above.

Joelle Leavitt Webber binds one-of-a-kind books and editions for clients, rebinds old books, and has created a line of blank books, gift boxes and albums. Her designs are based on historical models, built with traditional tools and techniques and use only archival materials.

K. Dale Turdo creates original, hand-built sculptures that are realistic in style. Turdo has received many awards and exhibits in Maine and across the country. She finds great pleasure and peace creating these beautiful works of clay and feels that sculpting is good for the soul.

Wendilee Heath O’Brien is versed in conventional painting techniques from eastern and western cultures. She transcends and manipulates these techniques to create a visual dialogue with her viewers, using watercolor, pastels and Asian ink.

Mary Ann Small is the owner of Maine Island Rag Rugs, whose rugs grace homes all over the world and provide warmth and beauty underfoot. Her rugs have been displayed at the Blaine House in Augusta, the Archipelago and the Jonathan Frost Gallery in Rockland, the Art Gallery at the University of New England’s Westbrook campus, the National Folk Festival in Bangor and most recently at the Camden Garden Club’s Showcase House rooms sponsored by Phi Home Designs.
