About Gary’s House
Gary Pike was a bright and adventurous eighteen-year-old from Kennebunk Maine. He was diagnosed with cancer in the summer of 1989. Over the next two years, Gary’s battle with the disease took him to Portland and later to Boston for treatment.

During this time, Gary witnessed the severe financial hardship and stress his family suffered as they spent many nights away from home. He watched their hotel expenses mount and saw his mother sleep many nights on the hospital room floor or in her car. Gary did not believe families should have to suffer this way when a loved one was seriously ill.

And the idea of Gary’s House – a place for families to come to when loved ones are seriously ill – was born. Gary lost his battle against cancer in 1991, but the dream did not die with him. His family, friends and the Kennebunk community worked tirelessly over the next seven years to raise funds to purchase and renovate the house at Portland’s 97 State Street.

Gary’s House opened in 1998 as an affiliate of Mercy Hospital.Since then, Gary’s House has welcomed families from all corners of Maine, across the country, and from around the world. It’s a living tribute to a courageous and compassionate young man who dreamed of making life better for others.

PORTLAND, MAINE, OCTOBER 29, 2010: The Chaplaincy Institute of Maine (ChIME), a non-profit Interfaith wisdom school and seminary, announced today it will grant its 2010 Planetary Chaplain Award to United Church of Christ Pastor, Mair Honan, of Portland, Me. Rev. Honan will be honored at a public award ceremony scheduled as part of the Institute’s Annual Spiritual Arts Auction this Friday, November 05, at 6:30PM at Pulse Dance Studio 865 Spring Street Westbrook/Portland. The public is invited to attend.

Each year the Chaplaincy Institute of Maine presents a Planetary Chaplain Award to an individual who brings spiritual sustenance to their work and service to others. The winner of the Planetary Chaplain Award receives a $500 contribution to his or her organization or cause. The award is based on an idea of

radical theologian Matthew Fox, who describes a Planetary Chaplain as, “an individual doing work that is a blessing to the community, a midwife of grace.”

The Institute’s Board of Trustees received nominations from the community and voted unanimously for Rev. Mair Honan to receive the award stating her work with the marginalized and homeless populations of Portland exemplifies a “Planetary Chaplain”. “Pastor Mair”, as she is commonly called by those she ministers to, co-founded Grace Street Ministries in 2006 and since then regularly walks the streets of Portland visiting with the city’s homeless offering compassionate ministry to those most others choose to ignore.

Pastor Mair spends her Tuesday and Thursday afternoon looking for homeless people, not to convince them to turn their lives around or put them in social programs, but to tend to their spiritual needs. Pastor Mair is a regular face at homeless shelters, having a pastoral presence at the Woman’s Overnight Shelter, Florence House, Oxford Overnight Shelter, Preble Street and the Wayside Soup Kitchen on various days of the week.

Re. Honan says, “It is good work for me because I get to pray, laugh and cry with some of the most wonderful people.” Part of Grace-Street Ministries Mission states: “to learn how we can be

pastors in this community [of homeless and marginalized], to remember the sacred in the midst of it all, and to decrease the imagined and real boundaries between those who have little materially and those who have much.”

Since its first ordination ceremony in 2002, The Chaplaincy Institute of Maine has ordained 63 Interfaith Ministers who now serve people of all faith traditions in over 43 organizations in ME, MA, NH, and CA through Hospices, prisons, street ministries, immigrant populations, children’s programs, schools, churches, eldercare homes, hospitals, law enforcement, universities, funeral homes, wherever they are needed by the community.
