York, Maine (September 23, 2011)— Local business owner Dana Whitney, of Design Lab 10, a graphic and web design company, will be running in the Wineglass Marathon in Corning, NY on October 2 and then again in the Disney Marathon on January 8, 2012. “I have never been a runner before, but decided to give it a try. I like to challenge myself with goals, so I decided I should go all the way and run a marathon.” Dana says in addition to the obvious health benefits, she uses the time spent running to brainstorm and get her creative juices flowing.

Dana donates graphic and web design services every year to charities from Maine to Florida. In addition to her time and services, she is using her running as a way to raise money for a charity, Caleb’s Crusade. She first met Caleb and his family before he was diagnosed with leukemia and spent many hours with them – as neighbors, friends and families with small children. From diagnosis, to treatment, to defeat…she witnessed the hardships and heartache first hand. Love, strength, family and community support brought the family through this horrible experience.

Since then, she has lost a life-long family friend to liver cancer and the father of her two oldest children has been diagnosed with brain cancer.

“Cancer affects everyone’s life in some way.” Caleb’s Crusade raises money to help the families concentrate on their loved ones, not their everyday expenses. “I have donated graphic design projects for this foundation and will continue to do so for as long as I can help. Now it’s time to put my sneakers to the pavement and run.”

If you would like to sponsor her marathon run or make a donation, please click here.

York, Maine (June 10, 2011)— Design Lab 10, a graphic and web design company, has recently announced its arrival into the Individual Property Website (IPS) market. Design Lab 10, a full service web and graphic design company has created print material and full websites for numerous clients, including real estate professionals.

“This is a client requested service. While it is not new to the real estate market, our clients prefer to continue working with us and receiving the service they are used to,” says Dana Whitney, owner of Design Lab 10. ”They can’t get the quality and service that we provide from an automated web-based company.”

Design Lab 10 hosts these Individual Property Sites (and all of the sites they host) on servers that are 300% wind-powered. Being “green“ is important to Dana and she makes environmentally responsible choices a benefit of doing business with Design Lab 10, not an expensive add-on.

“We imagine it will decrease some printing needs since Realtors can send their clients directly to a property specific website where they can view photos, property information, etc.” Additionally, as a service and a paper-saving option, when home seekers drive past participating Realtors’ signs, they can scan the QR code with their smart phone directly from the sign instead of pulling over to grab a listing sheet.

Design Lab 10 offers graphic design (logos, brochures, or other marketing collateral), web design, social media marketing and other promotional marketing services. For more information contact Dana Whitney at 888-563-3262 or Dana@DesignLab10.com. Visit the website at DesignLab10.com

Media Contact: Sally Newhall | 781 856-4805 | snewhall@maine.aiga.org

PORTLAND, MAINE — AIGA Maine announced their plans for ABSTRACT: The Future of Design in Media Conference, which will take place on June 10, 2011 in Portland, Maine. The conference will bring together leading graphic designers and innovators to share their views on the changing media landscape, to inspire and challenge, and to help shape the future of visual design for the converging television, print and digital media platforms.

“Design is power, and no organization understands that principle like the AIGA,” said Scott Dadich, Executive Director, Condé Nast Editorial Development and a speaker at the conference. “I’m excited to be involved in a conference that speaks to the fundamental import of great design in what is an increasingly hard-to-parse, disaggregated media landscape.”

Mr. Dadich will be part of a vibrant, interactive roundtable discussion led by Alice Twemlow, Chair, Design Criticism MFA Program at the School of Visual Arts in New York City. The roundtable will also feature such design thought leaders and innovators as Florian Bachleda, Creative Director of Fast Company, Dirk Barnett, Creative Director of Newsweek and The Daily Beast, Arem Duplessis, Design Director for The New York Times Magazine Group, Luke Hayman, Partner at Pentagram and Gael Towey, Chief Creative and Editorial Director, Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia.

Ms. Twemlow: “This conference brings together some of the best creative directors in the United States to reflect on editorial design’s new priorities. There has never been a more interesting time for this discussion, coming as it does in the midst of a media revolution that is changing forever the way we define and interact with content across all media platforms.”

This full day, in-depth, design exploratory will held in the Hannaford Lecture Hall at the University of Southern Maine in Portland from 8:00a.m. to 5:30p.m.

Tickets can be purchased online at: AbstractConference.com

* Conference: $250 Early Bird / $350 after April 1, 2011
* AIGA Members: $195 Early Bird / $295 after April 1, 2011
* Students: $75

AIGA, the professional association for design, stimulates thinking about design, demonstrates the value of design and empowers the success of designers at each stage of their careers. AIGA’s mission is to advance designing as a professional craft, strategic tool and vital cultural force. Founded in 1914, AIGA remains the oldest and largest professional membership organization for design, and is a nonprofit, 501(c)(3) educational institution.

About ABSTRACT: Although media and technology are changing fundamentally, and rapidly, the essential ingredients of good design are not. Whether you’re creating a print, film, motion, or digital experience is irrelevant; taste and editorial judgment are platform-agnostic. ABSTRACT strives to create a dialogue to inspire and challenge attendees. From a business-focused discussion of design as a driver of innovation — and revenue — to an in-depth practicum on launching an iPad publication, ABSTRACT promises to enlighten, challenge, and energize.?

Summer vacation is well behind us, but if you didn’t make it to Maine you can still “get there from here” visit us online www.delisedecor.com

DeLise Decor, Portland, Maine’s newest home decor shop announces the launch of their website, which features a broad selection from their unique and unusual home furnishings collection.

DeLise Decor opened its doors in the Portland’s bustling Old Port district in June, and has been creating a buzz ever since. Apartment Therapy (www.apartmenttherapy.com) has hailed the DeLise Decor collection as “drool-worthy” and locals and visitors alike are finding an enchanting experience at the shop.

Owner Lisa Daggett spent the last 13 years in New York City and has moved back to her native Maine to open the shop. She and her team of pickers comb the New England landscape for vintage and antique paraphernalia. She also works with local artisans and craftspeople in the creation of architectural salvage pieces, which includes 19th century Victorian chairs and settees reupholstered in modern fabric, a product proven to be very popular for its unexpected and delightful look.

Lighting, wallpaper, duvet covers and pillows all come from Lisa’s contacts within what has become a booming design cottage industry in the U.S. She states, “As a designer, I know the challenges of finding interesting pieces in a world of mass-produced materials. One’s interior decor is a reflection of their personality, so adding one-of-kind design is essential in achieving an original space.”

Located in a 19th century brick warehouse, which survived the fire of 1866, an experience in the Portland showroom is not to be missed. However, for those who can’t make it to New England soon, a visit to www.delisedecor.com is now a second best alternative.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Pulp+Wire Opens the Door for Aspiring Youth

(Portland, Maine) – Internationally recognized design firm, Pulp+Wire, is bolstering the creativity of local students seeking hands on experience<ins datetime="2010-07-28T11:15" cite="mailto:Michael%20Geneseo"> </ins>in the creative industry. Upon recently relocating from Westbrook to Portland, the firm has become a sensation in Portland’s Old Port district. However, in the midst of its success, Pulp+Wire has made a concerted effort to provide opportunity to three individuals seeking to establish and expand their breadth of real-world experience. Current summer interns, Sophia Lemire, Myles Wirth and Brian O’Leary have joined the work force with one of Portland’s leading design firms.

“I strive to create opportunity for interns because I appreciate those who gave me a chance when I was still figuring out which direction I wanted to go in” said Taja Dockendorf, founder of Pulp+Wire. The design firm has made it a point to expose the interns to areas of the field that meet and develop their specific skills. Thus far, the interns have been exposed to everything from graphic design to packaging, illustration to product development. Sophia, Myles and Brian are gaining work experience in a whirlwind of real-time deadlines and widely varying client needs, which makes it easy to exercise their personal talents in a multitude of projects.

Entering the firm with a strong desire to learn, each intern has found that such a unique experience has helped them to discover and pursue their inner passions. Brian O’ Leary, a recent graduate of Casco Bay High School, has been able to apply his artistic talents to the areas of graphic and web design. “I’ve always had a passion for art,” says Brian, “and at Pulp+Wire I have gained a valuable insight on how I can approach the world of creativity with a business perspective.” With plans to attend Massachusetts College of Art and Design in the fall, Brian is hoping to further develop his artistic knowledge and determine what specific area of study he will pursue in school.

Similarly, Myles Wirth is channeling his artistic passions into his work with illustrative design. At Pulp+Wire, he has been focusing on concept sketches and story boarding, both of which have exposed him to the many facets of graphic design. As a visual arts student at the University of British Columbia in Canada, Myles has used this internship as a means of unveiling his many artistic talents. He finds the experience very beneficial because it has shown him how “the digital arts are becoming more and more applicable in the business market.” Myles is currently in the process of designing an application for the iPhone and will continue honing his graphic design skills through the summer.

On the business side of things, Sophia Lemire sought out an internship that would expose her to the many facets of the advertising and marketing sector. “There’s only so much you can learn within a classroom; it’s how you apply your knowledge within society that will serve as the ultimate life lesson,” said Sophia, a sophomore attending the Whittemore School of Business at the University of New Hampshire. Through this internship, she has taken on various projects in the areas of advertisement and marketing and hopes to also get a taste of the digital arts. Sophia has used this hands on experience to further determine which areas of business she will pursue as a career.

These young individuals have set out on very different journeys but have crossed paths due to their common interest in creative advertisement. It is because Pulp+Wire reaches out to Maine’s aspiring youth that Sophia, Brian and Myles have been able to develop their many skills and pursue their path of self-discovery.
