Portland, MAINE (Dec. 09, 2010) – This holiday season, Sea Bags (www.seabags.com), a producer of designer bags made out of recycled sails has launched an innovative online auction for one-of-a-kind items, bringing together two distinct e-commerce strategies and giving shoppers a chance to bid for items that were previously off-limits.

On its new website, Sea Bags has launched a regular auction for unique items, such as a cat bag made from the only Aqua Cat catamaran sail the company has ever obtained or a duffel made from the historic schooner Roseway. Users can bid in $5 increments on the featured bag.

The strategy differs from third-party online auction sites such as EBay, which focus mostly on used merchandise and selling items for others, as well as from fixed-price online retailers that only rarely auction items as a one-time promotion.

“We think all of our bags are special, because of the lengths we travel to obtain recycled sails and the care we use in hand sewing each bag,” said Beth Shissler, president of Sea Bags. “Even so, each of the bags we plan to auction are truly unique, with stories to tell.

“We hang these bags on what we call our ‘Wall of Fame’ at the wharf store in Portland,” she said. “People always are asking us what it will take to buy one of those bags. Now, through the new website, we’re all finding out together!”

The new website also makes the site easier for shoppers to find the bags they want and to order custom products. After 14 months of planning and design, the site also creates an extensive inventory control system for fast-growing company.

“Our small company operates globally, buying used sails and selling bags to people around the world. We collaborate with some of the country’s best-known luxury lifestyle brands,” Shissler said. “We wanted to make sure that our website reflects who we are, with our commitment to innovation, quality and design excellence, all the while keeping the authenticity of our sails, our wharf and our salty crew.”
