Kennebunk, Portland and Saco—HomeHealth Visiting Nurses (HHVN) is honored to thank the community organizations, volunteers and staff who generously donated time and resources to bring joy to patients in need. HHVN recognizes the caring people who made a difference in the lives of children, families and seniors throughout Southern Maine in the spirit of giving this holiday season:

• The Elder Elves, a volunteer program of the Senior Center at Lower Village, assemble approximately 50-75 gift bags annually for seniors who are all alone on Christmas. The bags are filled using donations from supporters and local businesses, and every item is individually hand-wrapped by the Elves. These bags are distributed to seniors by HomeHealth Visiting Nurses (formerly SMMC Visiting Nurses), the town’s social services departments and Meals on Wheels. According to Susan Pettit, Executive Director at the Senior Center at Lower Village, the Elder Elves have been providing this gift to the community since 1992. “I am so very proud of this program,” Pettit says; “The Elves themselves often donate items for the bags …the volunteers who make this all happen are fabulous people.”

• Volunteers from the Seacoast Garden Club prepare several Boxwood Trees each year for HomeHealth Visiting Nurses to distribute to patients in Arundel, Cape Porpoise, Kennebunk and Kennebunkport.

• Greg Burns RN, a Pediatric Nurse with HHVN, provided the name of a family to the staff at Amica Insurance, who generously met the family’s needs this season.

Many HHVN staff and volunteers also bought, wrapped and delivered gifts and essential items to patients in need.

• The HHVN Intake Department sponsored two York County families.
• The HHVN Pediatric Nursing and Rehab team sponsored two families in Cumberland County.
• HHVN volunteers sponsored two families in Cumberland County.

[note: 2 photos attached. In the photo titled “Checking the List,” Nancy Hewett, Pediatric RN, is pictured at HHVN’s Portland office, checking her list of recipients next to a car loaded with donated gifts. In the photo titled “Loading the Car,” (also taken at HHVN’s Portland office) Greg Burns, Pediatric RN (pictured on the far left) and Louise Barton RN, Pediatric Clinical Supervisor (on the far right) watch while other members of HHVN’s Pediatric Nursing and Rehab Teams load the back of a visiting clinician’s SUV with donated gifts and necessities.

Portland, Maine: There are only 3 days left for Birth Roots nonprofit Perinatal Resource Center, an independent organization serving Southern Maine families since 2004, to stay in the running for a large grant from the Vivint Gives Back Project. Support from the community-at-large could push them into the top 20 finalists. Funding for small nonprofits like Birth Roots has become increasingly more challenging in the current economic climate. Receiving this 100k could sustain their vital work over the next few years.
CAMDEN, Maine (January 25, 2011) – New events, new categories and new sponsors are the reasons that the 2011 U.S. National Toboggan Championships, being held the weekend of February 11, 2011, will be better than ever.

The event continues to grow nationally, and this year new sponsors have come on board including Maine Today Media and L.L. Bean.

“We’ve had families come from Florida to California for the excitement of being part of a true Maine winter outdoor festival; all to watch 425 teams of goofy costumed “athletes” fly down a 40 ft wooden chute onto a frozen pond “, said Dan Bookham, Executive Director of the Camden Rockport Lincolnville Chamber of Commerce. “The Midcoast really comes alive in the winter. For the Toboggan weekend, there will be great entertainment on mountain and off, with fireworks in the harbor, activities for all ages and affordable lodging packages.”

Please join us to celebrate our 175th Anniversary!!

Please plan to join us as we gather around St. Benedict’s Church and Parish Center to renew old friendships, make new friends, visit with relatives and reminisce about the good ol’ days. We are hoping to see aunts, uncles, cousins and friends whose “roots” are in Benedicta. Mark your calendars and schedule your visit “back home” for this weekend.

We are in the planning stages for this, sure to be, memorable weekend. As our agenda takes shape we will be posting the events, times and locations of activities.

Mark your calendars and schedule your visit “back home” for this weekend.
