PORTLAND, Maine – Christmas comes with its own set of family traditions and for many, the season isn’t considered complete without seeing the classic holiday ballet, the Nutcracker. Portland Ballet Company brings its own unique New England version of the Nutcracker to Merrill Auditorium with its beloved The Victorian Nutcracker.

The show, which takes the classic Nutcracker story and sets it in historical Portland, Maine with sets, costumes, and characters inspired by historical figures, will be performed twice at Merrill Auditorium on Friday December 23 at 2:00 p.m. and 7.30 p.m.

The cast of professional dancers from the Portland Ballet Company, accompanied by the Portland Ballet Orchestra, is known for its lively, entertaining and beautiful Nutcracker. The story unfolds as young Olivia follows her Nutcracker Prince to the enchanted Kingdom of the Sweets, where she is dazzled by dancers from around the world – from the Russian Trepak to the Sugarplum Fairy.

The Victorian Nutcracker features Portland Ballet Company’s professional dancers as well as Portland School of Ballet students selected by audition.

This year’s conductor is Sean Newhouse, assistant conductor at the Boston Symphony Orchestra. Newhouse made an acclaimed last-minute debut with the Boston Symphony in February 2011, conducting Mahler’s Ninth Symphony on two hours’ notice in place of James Levine. The Boston Globe wrote that “The BSO often played beautifully for him, the strings digging in deeply in the final movement to produce a glowing and expressive tone.” No stranger to eleventh-hour substitutions, he also stepped in for Mario Venzago on short notice to open the Indianapolis Symphony season in 2008, to rave reviews commending his “expert” conducting and hailing the performances as “electrifying.” He is the first American-born conductor in fifteen years to be appointed Assistant Conductor to the Boston Symphony Orchestra, a position he took up in 2010 at the invitation of Maestro Levine.

Recording artist/singer-songwriter Jago Thorne brings his live show home to Maine with a debut performance at One Longfellow Square Sat. Nov. 26 at 8pm. About Bhagavan Das

Teacher, performer, counter-cultural icon, lover of God: Bhagavan Das is as rich and manifold as Existence itself.

Bhagavan Das is one of the last living cultural icon of the 60′s. As Ram Das’s mentor (author of Be Here Now) he ushered in the New Age Spiritual Movement being the first Kirtan Artist in America. Great Falls Construction Expands Management Team

Darren Shiers has been promoted to Business Operations Manager. Darren has spent the last 28+ years in the construction industry and has been a Great Falls team member for the past 5 years. Todd Rothstein has re-established his full time role as Business Development Manager and will be working closely with Darren to develop and implement the future goals and objectives for Great Falls. Aaron Bourassa has been promoted to senior project manager. Aaron has 19 years of construction experience and has been a Great Falls team member for the last 7 years. Some of his most recent projects include Goodwill Industries in South Portland ME and Manchester NH.

The new management team’s first priority was to hire two new project managers to keep up with our current workload. Jeffrey Barker, who has 26 years of construction and project management experience, has joined the company and is currently managing two projects in the Lewiston/Auburn area. Scott Forbes has also joined Great Falls and, along with 22 years of experience in the construction industry, brings with him a background in engineering and architecture. Forbes is currently working on the Southern Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery project.
